Help Visual notification of text messages/calendar appointments?

Is there any way to set a visual notification of text messages and calendar appointment?

I know it shows up in the notification/status bar at the top, but if the screen is off all you get is the audio notification and I'm finding I'm not noticing alot of texts until hours later. Anyway to set the screen to turn on when a text arrives, even only for a little while?

Not sure about the Calendar part but you could try the free SMS PopUp application which puts the text message pop up on the screen and allows you to set reminders so that it reappears.
