Visual Recognition Open Source Electronic Field Guide - your guide to everything!

Hello,

I have long admired the facial recognition application not for itself, but for its potential.

The facial recognition component means taking a picture of something can identify it provided it is already in the database. The open source aspect of this means if people latch onto the idea it has the possibility to exponential growth just like wiki did.

Think take a picture of any flora, fauna, geological item and have it identified with feed back on; dangers of use (poisonous?), how it can be used ( food/clothing etc), location, its relationship to other materials etc.

Ensure that the data base for this gets stored locally although it can update from and to "the cloud" so that its value beyond cell tower range (where it will find its greatest uses) will be ensured.

Now the average cellphone has been transformed into a true electronic field guide that retains its value to be brought with you even OUT of cell phone tower range.

Hunters and campers will ALL want to have this electronic field guide that tells us what we can and cannot safely eat or use of wild plant life for example.

Identifying every tree, bush, rock, plant (edible / non edible) animal, insect, etc becomes the lifeblood of every hunter, fisherman, naturalist, camper, survivalist, geologist etc on the face of the planet.

Include code for apple/android/windows
This would open up every cellphone user to become both a contributor and a potential customer.

This program, could benefit humanity and save lives.

Show the world what its been missing!

I'd like a free copy of the android app when you make one, although a royalty would be even better! *wink*

I'm just really shocked that no one has realized just how important this kind of app can be to the world

Post Script;
It would be advantageous to open the source code so that users might create custom recognition databases they come up with.
( Equestrians might want one for horses the same as enthusiasts of all types)

Can someone please create this for us all? I'd like to help field test it asap.

Google put one of these out a while ago. I THINK it was called google glass(NOT the glasses). it had a bunch of living things and buildings places, etc.

I never ended up using it but have seen it mentioned lots of places.

matching up living things is very difficult due to natural variations. No two plants look the exact same.

you might want to go dig that up somewhere.

I started a website forum WTH IS THIS??? | A picture identification site with the intention of making an app that allows posting to the forum for identification. Google has an image search feature however it is not all inclusive, plants ID has a identifier for plants as well but has to be taken on a specific colored background and is an estimate, bugs have a forum, so I figured if I grow my community by offering incentives for answering aka paying/profit sharing ad revenue with top poster monthly, quarterly, etc... I could create a good app. I have been advertising on instagram answering questions with #wthisthis #whatisthis but the need is def there.

Google Goggles is the original app you're thinking of. It basically does a google image search and tells you what something is if there are enough reliable matches (so famous buildings work well)
Your idea could work, although as others have said, plants are way harder as a pink flower that's dangerous to eat from a different angle could like a redder flower that's safe to eat! In addition, you are basically asking for a database of "everything", on the device. The storage requirements would be huge, I think you'll really struggle to make it work offline.
Even the offline google translate dictionaries are quite large, and they are just text...
