VM Price Increase! WTF?

I just looked at the VM site and see that they increased the $25/300 min. plan to $35 (a huge 40% increase) just a few months after I bought a new V. This really sucks! When did this happen and is there a way around it? Am I grandfathered in at $25 as long as I renew every month or something? They also increased the other 2 plans to $45/1200 min. and $55 unlimited.

The bottom two plans went up $10 a month while the top plan came down $5 a month. If you had an active account as of 19 July 2011 your plan will stay the same provided you don't change plans.

I personally, are not bothered by the increase. Compared to other plans with the same phone (i.e. MetroPCS $50), the plan is at a great price.

Sprint as well. I compared Sprint's lowest plan with the Optimus S vs Virgin's Mid plan (Sprint doesn't have a plan comparable with the $25/35 a month plan) and the savings was, IIRC $760 over 2 years. Even with the $10 a month price increase, that is still $520 over 2 years.

Here is the info, this is before the rate increase.

Sprint's cheapest plan is $69.99 a month with $10.00 for premium web which is required for the phone. This includes 450 minutes and adds 300 a month (says for a limited time, unsure if it is the length of the contract or not). Phone is free, total bill for 2 years is $1919.76 before taxes.

Virgin's lowest plan is $25 a month with 300 minutes, or $40 a month for 1200 minutes. Including phone for a two year period for 300 minutes is $749.99 or for 1200 minutes $1109.99.

Or if we compare unlimited plans, Sprint is $2639.76. Virgin is $1589.99.

It appears that VMU handles the grandfather clause quite reasonably. When I left for a trip to Europe two moths ago, I removed the auto-pay information from my account and simply let the service lapse at the end of my month. When I returned yesterday, I simply had to top off and immediately got back onto the $25 plan. Pretty solid, if you ask me.

Hopefully this is an indication that VMU takes its commitment to its existing $25 plan customers seriously and won't try to kick us off that plan for technicalities.

You have 90 days before the account expires. If you don't top-up every 3 months at least you'll lose your plan as well as your number (and that means your $25/month rate).

In all reality, it would suck to loose your plan, but $30-$35 a month still is awesome compared to anything else out there. I was nervous getting a "prepaid" plan, cause I always heard horror stories, but I have had NO issues, and am very happy with VM.
