Help Voice Mail Without Call?

Adara

So, I'm sitting in bed this morning, reading the news, checking twitter and doing all that morning stuff I generally do on my RAZR MAXX, and a voice mail pops up.

This seems odd to me as the phone didn't ring -- I should know, I had it in my hand at the time -- and even now, there's no missed call notification. But there was, in fact, a call that went right to Voice Mail.

I was on Wi-Fi at the time, but I hadn't turned off the network connection or anything. IIRC, I had a 3G connection with a couple bars, although it was sitting there white, because it wasn't doing anything.

What gives?

(I used to experience this problem long ago -- like, pre-Droid time -- but I haven't had it happen with a smartphone before.)

I believe its a Verizon thing. I've experienced the same on various phones, including the Maxx. It doesn't happen frequently enough to be an issue for me.

Probably intentional on the part of the VZW. I swear, it seems like my phones just start breaking down right around my 18-month upgrade date.

I know that there is a way for telemarketers to spoof the system and send a voicemail without the phone ringing. I don't know how it's done, but there seems to be a hole in the system that allows them to get away with it...

I just did a quick Google search and apparently if you are on the same cell service network, you can do this with your voicemail. You call your voicemail number and if someone leaves you a VM, you have the option of leaving them a voicemail response. This will send the VM without their phone ringing.

On a different note, I too have had the voicemail notification without a phone call. I've always wondered if it has something to with cell reception. If you're in an area with no reception or spotty reception, you might not receive the call. It would force the caller to leave a VM which you would get the notification when you have good service again. Just a thought...
