Voice recorder with file transer, not email

Hi, Android folks,

I'm using Froyo with Verizon Android 2. I was thinking of buying a little voice recorder for interviews, then thought maybe I could use my little Droid instead.

There's lots of voice recorders out there, but it seems ALL of them rely on email to transfer files. This is a problem if you're doing a 90 minute interview; the files are too big to send.

Is there an app that simply lets you transfer the voice files from the phone to your desktop PC via USB connection?

Most of the sound recorders keep the recorded files in their directory on SD card. All you have to do is to connect the phone to PC via USB in Disk Mode, navigate to that directory and copy the recorded files from SD card to PC.
 
Yes, but the problem is, when I hook up the phone to the PC via USB cable, the files are not seen by WinXp explorer. I can see the files using the FILES widget on the android, but they do not appear anywhere in the SD card when viewed in windows.

That is strange. I can normally browse the full content of my phone's SD card.
What happens, if first on the phone you copy the recorded file to "Music" directory (make a folder if you don't have yet), and then connect it to PC and browse that directory?
 
I already have a music folder on my SD card. I copied the file there, can see it using the "Files" utility that came with the phone,m but cannot see it in WinXP. I went to folder view options to make sure that I could see all the files in the window, but it was checked. So I should see it but i don't. Would a file have to be an .mp3 to be visible?

The issue is that my PC cannot "see" the files on the Android phone, even though the phone's own OS can see the files.

Perhaps because they are in a format that is unknown to your PC/Windows combo?

Have you tried the 'syncing' method?

Alternatively, you could try to convert a test file
 
Good suggestions. However, I've got the files in wave and mp3 formats, which I know my PC can "see". For some reason, they exist when I see them using the phone's fileutility, but they don't show up when using WinXP.

So they must be different wave and mp3 formats than the ones you can normally see on your PC.
I would still try both the conversion method and the syncing method to see if either will work.
You won't know until you've tried.
 
Shouldn't matter what kind of files. Windows can see UNIX files just fine same as UNIX sees Windows files. What version of windows are you using?

Unless they are not recognized as either UNIX or Windows files by the PC because they are corrupt. The phone would recognize them, because they were produced on that same phone.

To check whether those files are or are not corrupt I would try both the conversion and syncing methods.
 
I thought I had an answer, but I'm just puzzled now. I use Voice Recorder by Mamoru Tokashiki, mainly because it has a convenient widget, and I couldn't see the data files from my PC, either. However, I noticed a .nomedia file in the listing from the PC, so I thought it might have to do with how Voice Recorder hides its recordings from music players. I went into Voice Recorder and toggled hiding to "off," and sure enough, I could see the data files from my PC and there was no .nomedia file. Now the puzzling part: I went back in and toggled hiding back to "on," expecting things to go back the way they had been. Instead, they files were still visible from the PC and there was still no .nomedia file.

Maybe this experience will help in your case, even though it's still puzzling.
 
First, thanks for the replies. My question now is, how does syncing help with finding this file on the phone? When I plug in the USB cable, the file does not show up on my PC using WinXP explorer. When you say does it show up when i sync, what do you mean? Are you talking about finding the file using my Google gmail account?

By the way, the file is too big to send as email.

Wasn't your problem that it doesn't show up on your PC?

If it IS visible (and can be run) on both devices through syncing, then there's something wrong with your USB connection, over which you currently cannot see it on your PC, and which is therefore suspect, right?
I don't know about you, but I would want to know whether my USB connection is iffy or not.

If it is not visible on both devices through syncing, just like over USB, then there is not necessarily anything wrong with your USB connection, but is it the file that is probably corrupt because it apparently cannot be read by your PC, while it can by your phone.

But if you don't want to know what causes your problem then don't sync.

Sorry for being unclear. I can see the files on my phone, but not on my PC when the phone is hooked up via USB cable. In fact, i can see only a few folders on my PC, and those are the ones on my SD card. When i installed the Voice Recorder app, i transferred it to the SD card, thinking I would then see the folder there as well on my PC, but no dice.

When you say syncing, do you mean simply connecting the phone to the PC via USB?

I've also tried converting the .pcm file to mp3 and putting it my ringtones directory and also my music directory, but the PC still doesn't see the file.

Are you using Voice Recorder by Mamoru Tokasiki? If so can you see the directory /sdcard/com.tokasiki.android.voicerecorder from your PC? If so, does it contain a file named .nomedia? If so, try changing the Voice Recorder settings not to hide the recordings from music players. When I did that, the recording files (named things like data-2011-3-16-12-54-55.3gp) became visible in that directory when I reconnected the PC via USB.
 
I do have Voice Recorder by Mamoru Tokasiki, but when I look at my Droid files via USB on my PC, I only a few directories:
albums
albumthumbs
dcim
music
playlists
ringtones

and that's it.

So you do see /sdcard/com.tokasiki.android.voicerecorder directly on the phone but not in the Explorer window on the PC? I don't know what to tell you, then; I guess someone decided that that was a system file and that you might get confused if you saw system files and so it should be filtered out. It does appear in my setup (Nexus One running Gingerbread). Sorry.
 
Hi,
I needed to record a couple of hours of speech and installed tape-a-talk (free). It's uncomplicated and will upload your file to your dropbox account, bluetooth, mail or handcent sms ( I believe dropbox is what you're looking for). It worked flawlessly and I got the long recording I needed.

Didn't get Tape-a-Talk to work with DropBox. It made all the right moves, but the recording never actually arrived in the other DropBox (while DropBox works well for other files), on my computer. Tape-a-Talk did 'allow' the recording to be sent/'shared' via email, but that is obviously limited to 15MB files, which is not a 'long recording', of course.
 
I use Voice Recorder by Mamoru Tokashiki. I saved and sent the file using gmail and hotmail, but when I opened my emails there were no attachments. Also I have since formatted my sd card. Is there any way to find my recordings? They are very important to me.
 
I use dropbox. I have a DB "recordings" folder. While in that folder, I just hit menu/new/audio, select sound recorder and record away. Goes directly to the cloud.
 
I am having a similar problem with recorded music using HI-Q MP3 recorder.

New files are listed by the app but are not visible on the SD via WIndows7 - at first. There is some sequence of events e.g. changing to Mass Storage Mode on the phone that makes new files suddenly appear in Windows. It seems to have nothing to do with the location, type of file, etc. I have yet to discover exactly what steps make them appear.
