Help voicemail

So...my old S2 had an app on it that would record missed calls to an audio file. There was a pro-version (sans ads) but the free version was adequate.

Now that I have an S5 and an S6, I don't see anything similar. Not among the default apps, not on Playstore. There is voice mail but you have to dial a separate number, listen to the voicemails and then decide to keep or delete.

The old S2 app stored the recording on the phone...or at least it was directly accessible from the phone.

When I search Google play, all I see are voice to text (visual voicemail) and voice recorders. I don't really see any that automatically redirect a missed call to a recording on the phone. And I'm not sure how faithful and precise voice to text is, esp. if the caller isn't very clear or is long-winded.

Any thoughts, suggestions or help? Plz.

I hate this...someone just put me out of my misery--tell me there is no such thing. Tell me it was a stupid question. Tell me voice-to-text is the next best thing to sliced bread. But give me something so that I don't spend another late night reading Playstore descriptions of apps that, in the end don't actually do voice voicemail.

Google Voice.

You can use it for just voice mail (no second number) or get a second number (do it!!) and can use that as well. I use GV as my VM service and do use my GV number too. It's a fantastic thing! You can set it to transcribe VM's, it's not perfect and sometimes pretty darn funny. I don't do that though, just listen to my messages.

There is a TON that you can do with GV if you want. I just love it.

edit: Oh. The VM's stay in Google until you delete them. You can access them on your phone or on your computer. The GV app is sort of primitive but gets the job done. You can also use Hangouts with GV.

edit edit: I forgot, you're on prepaid, right? Which carrier? GV may still have issues with some of them. hmmmm. To use a GV number you have to be able to use unconditional forwarding, and some don't allow that. You could probably still use GV lite (VM only option). But get a GV number anyway, for future use :D

I don't know what "unconditional forwarding" is but I'm assuming I don't have it. My carrier is TotalWireless (UTT & 4GB @$35.00/mo.). They use the Verizon Network but none of my Verizon apps work. Except the voicemail option--I have to dial a number, the same number I had to dial when I actually had Verizon a year or so ago. It was a pain then and it's a pain now.

Would any of the voice to text apps work with this setup?

(and PS...if I haven't said it before...thank you for your generosity.

PSS...Did you get the greyhound?)

I have a feeling it will work since it's Verizon. You have to forward calls to GV so it can act as your VM client. The GV page should help explain it. I'm not sure about other voice to text apps for VM, I've never tried any of them. There is no harm, no foul if you get a GV number and try it. It'll either work or it won't, worst case scenario is you have a GV that's yours forever in case you ever can use it.
