How To Volume keys too easy to accidentally press

My wife just inherited my daughter's Droid and is having problems accidentally pressing the down volume button and turning the phone to vibrate.

Is there a way to make it harder to make this accidental press? Would using a cover recess the keys enough to help?

The Shell / holder combinations do recess the keys enough to make it harder to press accidentally, but if they are being pressed accidentally in hte first place, then it may take more than just a cover to alleviate the problem.
