volume rocker

i have searched all over the web for the answer and have not got to a solution. im hoping someone here can help.
first of i have a zte blade on android 2.2 (i don't know if that's relevant to the question).
the volume keys (up & down are located on the side of the phone & are very easily nudged. when they are nudged they make a noise as well as changed the volume. i have managed to find a app that when the volume keys are nudged it doesn't affect the volume (the app is called volume lock) but the volume keys still make a noise.
is there a way to mute these keys?

1. Your phone model is ALWAYS relevant. Ideally, you'll add it to your profile so you don't have to remember to include it in every thread you start.

2. When you say items making a noise, is it a tone that it is programmed to emit, or something more like a crackle?

thanks for the reply Ryan.
the noise is a tone. so presumably all i have to do is find & delete the sound file that gives the beep noise every time the volume buttons are nudged

I've got another question: are you finding it to be system wide, or just while the screen is powered off? For example, do you get the tones while adjusting the volume in YouTube? If that's the case, I'm not sure that there's much of a solution short of root (at least that I can think of).
