Root VROOT NOT a one click install for me!!

jakman

Newbie
Hi,

I have a Metro PCS LG Optimus L9 LGMS P765. I DID have debugging and allow from unknown location set. Tried to use the english version and it installed software to my phone but did not root the phone. I wound up uninstalling the software (much of which was still in Chinese but legible. No adverse affects to the phone. Tried the Chinese version of VROOT this morning and it took a LONG time to connect via USB. Once connected I clicked root and once again it took several minutes. I force quit the program with the intent of uninstalling again. I rebooted the phone and discovered that a software package called "RootMaster" was installed. The software also has it's own page of what I think are chinese versions of other programs (yahoo, etc) as well as a "Root" application. When I launched it it came up as RootMaster (english) with several options available.

1) Root - Once I clicked this it Rooted my phone.

2) Application permissions management (no idea what this is or what to do with it---HELP)

3) Clean Up Systemic Application (like #2 I don't know what to do with it)

4) System Optimization (Ditto)

5) Upgraded - Update installed application (when I click this it brings up options to update Google+, Google Maps, and Google Play - Not sure if I should update from here)

I also was prompted to install BusyBox...which I did. I saw nothing about updating binaries.

That's it for now but as I said in my subject line...hardly one click install. Any help on what to do from here I would appreciate.

@jakman so the phone is now rooted?
If so then install supersu, BusyBox (by stericson) and titanium backup from the play store.
Install and open surersu and grant root rights. Install and open BusyBox grant root rights, the binaries should update then install v1.21.0 of BusyBox. Install and open titanium backup, grant root rights goto backup and restore and navigate to the vroot app and freeze it. Now you should be all set to install the L9 recovery installer and flash cwm recovery.

Phone IS rooted and is currently using the Chinese RootMaster SU. BusyBox is installed as is SuperSU...Titanium BU is installed. Not sure what you mean by manually granting "root rights". T BU seems to have those rights. MY BusyBox version is 10.9.2 WAY OFF from your recommendation. Not sure what L9 recovery installer or Flash CWM recovery are located or what to do with them. Thanks for the reply!!

Thats because the vroot installs it's own version of supersu and busybox, if you want you have to download supersu by chainfire and BusyBox by stericson from the playstore and use them instead of the ones installed by the vroot. Supersu by chainfire asks to grant root rights to apps 1 time instead of automatically granting root access like the vroot supersu seems to do.
So if you want to remove the ones installed by vroot, (if your worried about spyware) you have to download the ones i recommended from the playstore.

1. Install supersu by chainfire, it will tell you that you have two supersu installed and ask if you want to select supersu by chainfire as preferred app. Select yes.

2. Install BusyBox by stericson and when you open the app it will update the binaries and gather the the system info, you'll already have a version of BusyBox installed (10.9.2), to the system/xbin from vroot, then choose uninstall. It will uninstall that vroot BusyBox version from system/ xbin, Select the drop down box and choose BusyBox v1.21.0 and use smart install.

3. Now use titanium backup to freeze the vroot apps

4. Go to the L9 all things root forum and look for (guide) Recovery for stock L9 with locked bootloader. This will give you instructions on how to install L9 CWM recovery, which will allow you to do nandroid backups and install flashable zips. You cannot install roms with this verion.

Thank you very much for your assistance. Here's the status...

I re-rooted and let it run instead of intervening for taking so long to install. Took a nap and woke up to it being rooted.

1) Chainfire's SuperSU v1.91 is installed. Superuser is enabled. EVERY time I launch it the program tries to update the binary. Options are to cancel (the program closes) or to continue. Continue gets me "installation success". Does NOT prompt me to make SuperSU the preferred app.

2) BusyBox v1.22.1 by stericson also installed. IT also keeps prompting me to install/uninstall or restore. It DOES show me many applets (which I have no idea what they are or what they do).

3) Running TB and find the RootMaster SU (chinese) and am not able to freeze with the free version. Have to upgrade to pro. There are also delete and uninstall options. When I freeze however I fear I may have a problem since SuperSU didn't prompt to make it the preferred SU app. I seem to recall seeing other links here or on XDA about other ways to make SuperSU the primary SU but can't remember where since I've been reading so much here lately!

To be clear, I am not really interested in CWM recovery at this point. My goal is to remove bloatware (don't really know how) and to move apps to external SD card...thus freeing up internal memory space. Any other help you can provide is REALLY appreciated. Thanks again!!

You don't have to freeze it. Just install the playstore su app of your choice. Go to data/app copy the playstore su apk to your sd card. Then uninstall the playstore su. Now go back to the copy you made and move it to system/apps change permission rw-r-r . It will install on its own. If not reboot then it will be there for sure. Now open it grant it super user permission to update binary. Then go to T BU and uninstall the Chinese app. Easy as pie.

I think I have bricked my phone. During one of the SuperSU launches which I have told u keeps asking to update the binary I have two options. One is the "Smart" install and another is a CWM recovery install. Chose the latter and it overwrote my OS (sorry I am a windows guy by trade). Anyway, it took my phone back to stock OS...all data and installed apps gone. Fortunately I had made a T BU to my external SD earlier. So....started restoring both user apps, data, and system apps and data. Manual process because I was using T BU free version. Got to a certain point and the phone wound up on the MetroPCS screen and froze there. I have looked at your "how to unbrick lg l9" guide and don't know where to find the 10e kdz file. I have the mobile support tool and flash tool downloaded and installed although I don't know how to access the mobile support tool since I see no shortcut anywhere. I guess my first task is finding the 10e KDZ for metro pcs lgms769. Again, phone won't go into recovery mode at this point even pressing volume up and plugging in usb.

Take the battery out, put it back in then try to have it go into upgrade mode... You can use the 10d kdz then do an ota upgrade before you root.

Got to software upgrade mode screen but nothing after that. I WAS able to hard reset the phone and am back and even have a SuperSU icon even though I have to reroot. I've rerooted and am going to install Titanium BU and restore JUST apps and user data....leaving system stuff alone. That's what messed me up last time!! :)
