Help VZW 2.2 Update Doesn't Work/ Cant Access Settings

Greg90

Lurker
To make it easy to understand what's going on I'll provide a bulleted order of events:

  • An update to Android 2.2 got sent to my phone by VZW
  • I click install update and phone reboots
  • Partially into update process, the progress bar freezes and a big yellow exclamation point appears
  • After waiting for update to finish I finally restart phone as it is frozen
  • When phone reboots, I can't access settings to set a password, change ringtone, etc.
  • This was several months ago. I never had time to go to the VZW store and get it fixed.
  • Today I finally went to the store
  • The store asks if I tried a reset from recovery mode. I said yes. It didn't work
  • The store says that they cannot flash the software on my droid and since its under warranty I'll need to buy a new phone
  • I stare in amazement that Verizon wants to sell me a new phone over a software issue (let alone one their update caused)

So is there anything I can do to flash the phone and fix this?

With my old Droid I had installed a custom ROM (Bugless Beast) and remember how to do so, but I'm not sure if installing a custom ROM will actually fix my problems here.

Thanks for the help in advance

I'm not - their techs are less techy and more salespersons. With a few notable exceptions (such as a few mods here, among others). but they are not folks that you'll normally find in retail stores, either.

Yeah the guy didn't even know how to boot the phone into recovery mode. *sigh*

I guess this is why Atlas Shrugged ;-)

LMFAO - 'zactly.

Seriously, though, I joined here about a week before the D1 dropped to really research if this was the phone that I wanted. I read and read and read and compared and decided that this was the one - and I am supremely happy with it.

Had I had the money to buy the N1 from Google directly, it would have been possibly a better choice for me - but I am addicted hook, line, and sinker (yes, mixing cliches) to this phone, and it's gonna be a long time before I 'upgrade' - I hate all the special features being added by the OEMs these days, like Moto BLAH or the other one on the HTC phones....I like my phone to be mine - has what I want, doesn't what I don'. Period.

For previous dumb phones I used Howard Forums as my one stop repository for apps, and for my old HP iPaqs I used to use ZDAa lot for coked ROMs, but for Android, I stick to this place. You'll learn a lot, and you'll be amazed at some of the things this 'ancient' phone can still do....

I've run just about all of them. I used to run UD, have tried Simply Stunning, BB (which I like, but it is so not customized...Pete likes keepin as close to stock as he can), LFY (my current fav) and a few others. There are some newer ROMs (like MIUI) that I ahven't tried, but the interface is .. too minimalistic for me.

I am currently runnign LFY 1.96 (private build, 1.95 is the current public build) OC'd to 1100 MHz and with around 130-135 user apps installed. Oh, and I am testing anywhere from 4-6 apps at any given moment, including a couple from here....

With the OC and the high number of apps I have installed, I need stability over anything else, and then responsiveness. It's why I ran UD for a long period of time, regardless of all the infamy that the dev garnered over his practices, and why I run LFY now.

FYI after Verizon insisted nothing could be done to fix it and I needed to BUY A NEW PHONE I fixed it in 10 minutes with those instructions you linked me to. :D

Now I'm going to try a few different ROMs till I find which one I like. First is LFY

Update: I'm running LFY. I've run some ROMs before but my Droid is like a new phone now. Holy crap I can't believe how much faster and stable it is than Verizon's standard rom. Makes me want to keep this phone for a long long time.
