(VZW) unlocked developer edition

Total cash grab on all parts. Have people pre-order to keep unlimited data, then piss them off because the phones are locked/encrypted, then announce unlocked versions.

Can't see how anybody who bought the phone would be happy with this.

I bought mine and do not plan on returning it and I am kinda upset they pulled a quick one at least should have said this would be out shortly after. I am happy with the phone plus the devs are already making great progress and this can only help with getting the bootloader unlocked.

I've still got my old faithful Incredible and was thinking last month of changing with a pre-ordered S3 or Inc 4G. Then I decided to wait and go full price.

I was close to pulling the trigger just a couple of days ago but held off when I saw that Big Red had mutilated the bootloader and had convinced myself that I'd be switching carrier's.

Now I read this and it's got me thinking again. The only concern I have is what sort of warranty the phone will have in the event one purchases a lemon.

Most interesting development though. Made me smile big time. :)

I think since I would assume everything else minus the bootloader would be the same that they could somehow port this to current sgs3 or at least use it to crack the bootloader like they did with the atrix.

i thought about moving this thread to the VZW ATR section..and a Mod may come in here and still do that. But really i guess it could serve a purpose in both places....anyways..

I never had intentions on getting an S3, nothing about it really impresses me however if this is true about a Dev Edition ...it rubs even me the wrong way.

VZW's excuse is " we don't want unlocked bootloaders on our network because we don't want unauthorized software on our network that could potentially degrade network performance for other legit users"...

lets not even get in to the fact that there are ALREADY OTHER devices on their network with an unencrypted bootloader.

So is VZW saying..."hey if you guys give some extra cash to Samsung then we'll let it slide and you can have an unencrypted bootloader"? ....

total garbage.

^ And while Verizon is every bit to blame, Samsung agreed to this business strategy. It's brilliant because people think Samsung is going against Verizon and doing them a favor by selling them unlocked phones.

I'm equally disappointed with Samsung. And from what I'm reading around the web, everyone's sympathizing with them as though this wasn't all planned months ago.

This smells like an attempt to do damage control after a big mistake. Unplanned and now rushed announcement while this new version of the phone does not even have an availability date.

So this is the full price, unsubsidized phone. Verizon will discount the monthly plan by, say $20 per month for 2 years since they don't pay for the device and won't even need to support it?

NOT !!!

What a ripoff, they found another way to make $400 on their customers and providing NOTHING for the money.

Way to upset your customers and give them reasons to jump ship as soon as the other carriers' networks have caught up VZW! Pathetic really.

Now we know how the DROID RAZR folks felt when they came out w/ the DROID RAZR MAXX.

uhhhh not really...the RAZR MAXX had a bigger battery and that is it....This Dev Phone is rumored to have an unlockable bootloader. Huge difference. The people that bought the RAZR and then a week later learned of the RAZR MAXX are reading this and saying "wow we came out on the good end".....

Eh, I don't blame Samsung for trying to capitalize on Verizon's decision to lock the bootloader.

Assuming that Samsung will be handling warranty claims, support, software updates etc for this phone and Verizon is basically just the network the phone runs on, they're just filling in the void that Verizon ignored.

What I meant was you buy a phone & then a very short time later they make the same exact phone, but better. Kind of pisses you off.

I actually feel that buy buying the phone you are giving into verizon and showing they can offer one version and then another but you have to buy it full price. Like why not have the option right away. You can agree to not bring it in if you F it up and they unlock it when you first activate it. An unlocked bootloader does not make more bricks. Its the locked down ones people screw up and return.
