VZW updates. Dev vs Reg edition.

Will the developer edition of this phone get updates any faster than the regular version for Verizon? That would be pretty much the only reason for me to get the developer edition.

Thanks

My guess would be no. Your advantages with the developer edition are the unlockable bootloader and the ability to get the 32GB of storage without the access to Motomaker.

You will of course in time have access to motomaker so if you are not of the mind to root your phone, there really is no advantage to the developer.

That's just a guess though.

I thought it could get updates faster since it doesn't have to go through the carrier for certification.

Maybe the GSM one. It wouldn't surprise me if they treat the VZW the same.

Really the only reason you should get the Dev is for:

1) No contract
2) Boot loader
3) More Storage

I wouldn't bank on the faster updates.

That's what everyone thought for the Galaxy Nexus.

Also the "certification" of an update with Verizon is nothing technical, it's just foot dragging.

People here should be able to say for sure, at least a few around here have the dev edition I think.

Do they have the camera update? (I honestly don't know)

Nope.

I don't hold any hope of getting updates faster than a "regular" X on Verizon. It's still Verizon and they still have to test/approve everything, which means...a long wait. Longer than any other carrier. Because that's the way it is with Verizon. It's not going to change any time soon.

This new camera update is coming to VZW fairly soon and not that much after AT&T got it. Not really a big issue. It would seem logical for them to need more time about this stuff.

See, here's the thing though. (and I freely admit I'm making it up) I'd bet Moto released the fix to everyone at the same time, or close to it. They don't care what carrier it's for, it's for the camera software on the 'base' phone. The camera fix is the camera fix. Sprint doesn't have a different camera than ATT or Verizon, they all have the same camera software 'cause it's all pretty vanilla on Moto's end.
ATT et al are MUCH faster with testing it and pushing OTA's. Verizon is, and always has been, hideously slow. They are always the last in line for updates. They like to blame Moto (whoever) but really, it's just them being their reliable slow-ass selves.
I just don't buy into the "Moto is dragging their heels on this, not us" crap they always spew :)

I've never seen Verizon blame any OEM about updates. Frankly, I never see any comments from the company about updates at all. Frustrating. I wish that the OEMs and Verizon were more transparent about update schedules. It sucks that they're not.

Verizon is almost always slower than other carriers for updates on the same Android handset. It's the way it's been for a while. If you don't like it, then go to a carrier that updates faster. Or buy an iPhone if you need to stay on Verizon. Or, if you need Android and Verizon, accept the fact that the updates will come, but you'll just have to be patient about it.

Bellyaching to them is probably a good idea, though. They won't know that you're upset about it if you don't tell them. It probably won't change anything, but if enough people complain, maybe it will.

(The issue, of course, is that the vast majority of phone users - the ones that don't frequent a forum like this - probably don't know about updates, and probably don't care all that much anyway. Verizon surely knows this. Oh well.)

I was actually reading comments on the Verizon forums and they did say it was Moto's delay. Don't have the link now (on my phone) but the Verizon poster tried to deflect blame for the holdup.

I'm not complaining, just pointing out they are not the best when it comes to timely updates.

Yes you are making it up and I have to ask why?

I tried to get a handle on one single question in the past and had Z-E-R-O responses. That was simply to have some post a screenshot of the bottom of the Settings | About phone from each carrier. We could then compare them and see what was different and what was the same.

This might shed some light on why some carriers get the updates out the door faster than others.

It is my understanding that each carrier gets an update from Motorola and tests it with its pre-installed software (AKA bloatware). Any failures are reported to Motorola. Motorola prepares an update. It is released again to the carrier and tested again. The cycle continues until the carrier is happy with the result and releases it as an OTA.

How is this happening in Moto X with multiple carriers?

So ... post a screenshot at ... http://androidforums.com/motorola-moto-x/765569-about-phone-moto-x.html ... maybe we can start formulating some answers.
