Root Wait to root until signed up with a carrier?

So my Nexus should arrive today, but my Verizon contract isn't up until the 16th. I plan to go with T-Mo. So I'll be waiting a week and some days until my contract with Verizon is up before activating the Nexus with T-Mo (want to port my number and such).

Can I root before activating? Does T-Mo care? I Plan on putting AOKP as my first Nexus ROM.

To root or wait....that is the question. :D

I think I rooted mine without a SIM Card in, didn't make any difference to me.

Not sure about activating, I'm UK and we do things slightly differently to you guys afaik.

i rooted and rommed mine a good three weeks before i had a sim card and a carrier...

in fact i tried out multiple roms before i found the one i liked..

but do not expect to get the same battery life when you get a carrier...expect it to drop exponentially

I waited about 10 days before I rooted mine. I wanted to get used to the phone, so I would notice anything buggy after root.

Thanks everyone! Mine and my wife's Nexus phones arrived a few days ago. And I have rooted and rommed mine and am ready to go (AOKP & franco kernel). The wife's phone is still stock for now, but she's really interested in the Halo feature on PA, so will most likely flash that on her's.

Now to sit and stare at these beautiful phones for a week until the 16th when our Verizon contract finally expires. Ugh!

Unlock, root and get a 30 day prepaid plan from T-Mobile today.
Make sure you get a signal at work and home before you commit. Use the number they give you, and then port your vzw number to Google voice. If all's good, then you just add the new number to voice forwarding. If T-Mobile doesn't work out, get anther SIM, and add that number. People will still call the ported vzw number forever.
