Help Want to find and remove app killer

davisxx

Lurker
I was told by a support tech of a program I'm running on my phone that I need to remove the app killer.

I went to settings-applications-manage applications, but when I scroll through the list there is nothing resembling an app killer on the list.

Does this likely mean the tech is wrong and that I don't have an app killer installed? Or should I be looking somewhere else?

Thanks.

The Photon includes a built-in task killer called Task Manager, but it's not the same thing as what the tech is probably talking about. What he's referring to is a separate app that you can download from the Market. Many people used to think they were absolutely necessary to keep your phone from running out of memory, and perhaps in the past they were useful. Now, not so much; Android is designed to actively manage app memory, self-killing apps as needed to make sure your focus app has what it needs.

Bottom line: don't worry about the built-in task manager, and don't bother downloading a separate task killer. :)

Well actually maybe this is what is causing the problem.

What do you think about me disabling/removing task manager to see if it solves my problem? Or is it too essential not to have?

(Thanks for the help. As you can tell, I'm an Android newb.)

You can't remove the built in Task Manager.

Only way we can really help you determine if you have an app on your phone with a built in task killer is if you list the apps you've downloaded from the market. From there, we may be able to help you narrow down the possibilities.

Here is a complete list of what I've downloaded:

Barcode Scanner
Bible
Craigslist
Craigslist Notifications
Dictionary
Facebook
Flashlight
Light Flow
Living Social
NHL GameCenter
Skype
Stubhub
Tweetdeck
Twitter
Watch ESPN
WGR Radio

Thanks!

None of those should have a built in "task killer." What exactly did you call into the Sprint tech support to resolve?

I think they're wrong, as far as recommending removal of a task killer because none of these would be killing tasks.

Cell phone monitoring software was producing an error message warning that the service was running longer than 45 minutes.

Tech support said it was due to an app killer, but I haven't found one.

Just looked back at the error and it started out with "Task Manager Alert".

Ohhh...I see what you are referring to now. Were you browsing the internet for 45 minutes or more (consecutively)?

Check the built in task manager to see if you have any apps in the "Auto-end list"

FYI-The tech support rep you spoke with was obviously not that familiar with the Photon, otherwise they would've known that it has a built-in task manager.

First question - yes. It runs continuously I believe.

Nothing shows up in the auto-end list.

Okay, there have been some other reports about this pop-up. It's not an error. This is one thing I haven't come across yet.

Nonetheless, some people have reported this pop-up coming up when they've browsed the internet for 45+ minutes. Seems like something built into the system that can't be changed (as far as I'm aware). It's really not an error based on other reports I've seen about this.

As far as I know, this pop-up does not interfere with the app you're using, it's just letting you know that it's been running for a long time. Some people were getting it with music players as well. Task Manager doesn't have a "white list," nor does it have any way to turn it off short of rooting your phone and removing it manually (probably not a good idea).

I don't have any ideas on how to keep the notification from popping up, but unless it's actively interfering with your app (ending it, etc.) I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I've been getting it while streaming Tune in radio. All it does is warn you that the app has been running for 45 minutes and would you like to stop it . It won't kill anything if left alone. Although slightly annoying it did help me one time after I thought I had shut down tune in and apparently it was still running in the background.
