Root Want To Root, But Not Sure Which ROM To Use

I'm looking to root so that I can tether, but I don't know which ROM I should install at all. Is there anywhere (I did look, honest!) that explains what each version does? I was more than happy with the standard G1 UI, I just want tethering.
