Want to try rooting

fed up with vodafone programmes, poor battery and no update to my KE5 firmware, so want to root and update with Odin. Have spent hours reading through the forums incl xda etc and still feel a bit confused about the process and which files I'll need. looking at litening ROM, it looks like this is a simple process for idiots like me, and in one process will
1. root my phone
2. install up to date firmware
3. add a new ROM

Is that right?
Will this give me the same root access as just rooting the phone?
If I find I don't like the ROM, will I just be able to flash back onto stock kernals??

also, the latest version of litening to download seems to be v2.0, but there is a 2.1 and 2.2 update that you need to "flash via CWM Recovery" - what is this and is it easy to do (any guides anywhere)??

It's pretty easy to flash lite'ning rom. I used this guide.
[ROM] Lite'ning Rom v2.2 XXKG1 - Fast as Lightning - xda-developers

You need to download winrar to unrar the 2.0 rom then just follow the instructions. They are simple to follow as they have pictures.

As for updating to 2.1 and 2.2. You just download these directly with your phone. You may have to instal a different browser from the market to do this as I had problems with the one LR2 comes with. Then just open CWM and select flash update, then go to your download folder and select the update zip.

I had a problem with one of these updates where I got stuck in a boot loop so I rebooted into recover and factory reset and wiped cache then rebooted.
 
errrm, not technically minded, what is the access point name settings??

and are you liking litening rom??

and do you go 2.0 to 2.1 to 2.2, or straight from 2.0 to 2.2?

Go to settings then select Wireless and Network, then go to Mobile Networks and then Access Point Names. Click on the one with the coloured circle next to it as these are the settings you are using and copy down the info in the next page.

And yes I am on Lite'ning rom and I'm a fan.

Yeah I went from 2.0 to 2.1 to 2.2
 
one last (I hope) question

under wap settings, there is a password, it is *** - how do i find out what this is !?!?
 
My password setting had always been "not set", so I'm not too sure. Maybe if you do a google search for your network providers generic WAP settings you will find them.
 
downloaded everything but 2nd thougts now - seem to be lots of comments on XDA about homescreen lag with 2.2
 
gonna stop fussing and do it tomorrow

for the updating via CWM, did you download files from phone's browser, transfer from PC or use update app??

does it update from the zipped file or the extracted file?
 
CWM will be loaded onto your phone when you flash 2.0. For the 2.1 and 2.2 update, I downloaded them direrctly with my phone then used CWM to flash them.
