Wanted: simplest possible SMS setup

The stock SMS app insists on replacing certain sequences of characters with stupid bloody emoticons. So I'm looking for a simple SMS app to replace the stock one.

I hate graphical emoticons, especially when they replace not-actually-a-smiley text content. I don't want bright colours, or bubbles, or tacky themes. I just want to read the characters that someone else typed into their phone to send to me, preferably in a bland-as-possible setting.

Is there an app for that?

Want boring, get a Blackberry! ;-) I have been using GoSMSPro. Free in the market. Lots of settings. I am sure some of them are going to suit you.

I second Go SMS Pro. You can set the smileys that you want. And in your case you could just delete all the pre-installed smiley signs.

GO SMS Pro seems pretty nice, but I can't see how to disable smileys completely... am I just dense? ;) or is it not obvious?

Okay, so it looks like you can't turn off smileys in Go SMS Pro, so my original question still stands: SMS app sans smiley replacement!

I wonder where i saw the setting to change the smileys... I could've sworn Go SMS had it.

Yeah, it's a shame because it has a much better feel (for me) than Handcent or even the stock app. But I can't find the setting anywhere, and it seems that there's no way to ask questions, report bugs, give feedback, etc other than the market reviews.

Well they actually have a pretty good dev team. If you open Go SMS Pro, hit the menu button, you can vote on what made you want to uninstall and they'll usually try and add that in their next release.

I will keep searching for wherever i saw this setting! Cause I swear you could edit all the smileys! Damn...

Ah, silly me, it's right there in the app under "Help Us..."

So I sent them a couple of emails, and no response. I think perhaps no-one's home.

Looks like Handcent, for all its bloat, is the only app that can display an SMS without eye candy.
