Welcome to Android Forums, Kavya!

Sorry you are having difficulty with your phone. Yes, after several failed attempts at pattern unlocking, you must then authenticate using the gmail account and password that the phone is registered to. A couple of things, when you are entering the gmail name are you using just the user name or the full name (jsmith or jsmith@gmail.com)?

Also, for this to wrk, you must have a data connection so Google's servers can authenticate you. If you don't have a data plan and WiFi isn't on, there's little you can do but perform a full factory reset, which will wipe your phone of pretty much everything and put it back to the way you got it when it was new.

If you've simply forgotten the password you can reset it here: https://www.google.com/accounts/recovery?service=mail
