Wanting to use handcent but with free messaging app

I love handcent and it's customizability. but i'm going to get rid of my texting plan because it's too much money. is there a way to just use my data plan for text by using handcent? i know of apps that use your data plan + a new number. anything helps!

I think you will struggle to do away with texting via normal sms altogether. However Whatsapp or Viber can be used accross platforms provided both sender & recipient have it installed. You probably knew that though.

so you're saying that if i use these apps, everyone else i message must have them installed too? if so, is there one that isn't like that?

Nobody 'must' have apps like that installed, but if they do you can SMS them for free. And they you.
If they don't have that app installed you can still SMS them, like normal, so not free.

I recommend the free 'MySMS' app. And if you also install the free 'MySMS Messenger' app from http://mysms.com to your PC or Mac you can use MySMS from the comfort of a large screen and fullsize keyboard. While your phone stays in your pocket or on the charger.

Without you needing a texting plan? Explain please.
1.Go to voice.Google.com and sign up for a free voice account
2. down load the Google voice app
3. Down load hand cent
4. tell Google voice to send SMS via hand cent
5. Profit

I'd guess the OP is in the US (or North America anyway) from the talk of a "texting plan".

What on earth makes you think the 'rest of the world' doesn't have texting plans?

Why do you assume the OP doesn't need to send or receive texts to/from 95% of the world?

FYI: the world is a little bigger than just the US, you know! Quite a lot bigger, actually. In fact the US population comprises less than 5% of the world's population! So the US population is de facto a tiny, tiny minority. Know your place!

Actually I'm British - be careful of your assumptions ;)

I've only heard the specific phrase "texting plan" used by North Americans. That's why I said that. Nothing else, and I make no assumption about the OP's requirements.

In fact I'm well aware that texting is more common in Asia and Europe than the US. The ideas of charging extra to enable texting at all, and charging to receive texts, are both things that I associate with the US (neither exists to my knowledge in Europe, and I find both concepts frankly outlandish).

To the OP: I think HeyWire will do what you want. You get a new (separate) number, but it's free, worldwide, uses your data plan exclusively, and the recipient doesn't need to also use the app (except for MMS). MMS still works to non-HeyWire users, but the recipient gets a hyperlink instead of an embedded image/video.
