As a Canadian, and as a general lover of tech, I want to see RIM do well, but this is pretty damn silly. The problem with RIM isn't Android. The problem is they haven't innovated enough.
I think the old Lazardis quotes I ran across recently sums it up really well. Years ago he stated:
"There will never be a Blackbery with an MP3 player or camera"
"A Blackberry with a name is ridiculous"
He clearly expected the corporate and government customer base to be more than sufficient for RIM and completely underestimated the value of the consumer base. They rested on their laurels for far too long and focused in the wrong areas. Companies like RIM don't change direction on a dime and we're seeing them still trying to avoid the iceberg like a massive ship turning at the last second.
Even if say Android DOES fall a part, what good would that be to RIM. Apple is already dominant in this business so far.
Suddenly we go from discussing to trolling?
Android has the market share by over ten percent. iOS
just recently (as in the last couple of months) passed BlackBerry to garner the number two position. RIM is committing suicide yes, but that doesn't suddenly give the title to anyones favorite player.
Stop reacting in a reactionary fashion to "protect" your beloved mobile OS and try actually reading what you're responding to. How did you miss
"say Android DOES fall apart"? If Android is out of the picture Apple does have the dominant position. Your own reply even acknowledges this. Granted, that's a scenario that won't happen but read and understand what you're responding to before incorrectly tossing the troll label around. Troll doesn't mean someone that you don't agree with or someone that states something that you don't like. Splash104 is discussing.
To me those numbers don't mean anything.
You can stick your head in a hole in the ground if you want, I guess... What would you go by instead to determine who has market dominance? We can only assume you're going by gut feeling otherwise. An objective measure generally means more to people.
I want RIM to do what they're good at. Secure mobile products. I don't want them to die off, but the cornerstone of RIM is that you know your data is as safe as it can be on a mobile phone.
But there is only so much security you can have when you connect to Facebook and Twitter.
Can BB's not connect to FB or Twitter? If they can, it seems odd to use that as an argument pointing out Android security deficiencies. RIM is good at corporate and government customers and that's because of the security in their email setup as well as IT policies which allow for granular lockdowns of devices. That and centralized device management.
I have a soft spot for RIM. Don't wanna see em fail...
I used BB's for ages because they were the best option at the time but I don't understand statements like this. However, I assess products individually and brand doesn't matter to me. I personally don't get brand loyalty but I don't offer loyalty to any entity that doesn't reciprocate. If any company can't keep up then they don't need to stick around IMO. I'll happily switch as needed.
I can, however, understand the Canadians that want RIM to do well. I guess that's contradictory if you view nationalism as just another form of brand but that's my opinion for what it's worth (maybe 2 cents).
Apple is googles only true opponent in this industry. The recent string of lawsuits apple has filed against amazon, HTC, and samsung are simple proof of that.
I don't get why people single out Apple (aside from competitor fanboyism). Apple's not the only tech company that files lawsuits against competitors. I'm not saying I agree with Apple's suits but any company has to actively and aggressively attempt to protect IP.
