Help Warning ! Official Gingerbread Released For Orange UK

Phoned Orange again !!!

They said that the faulty update is still available on Kies (and not to install it)

They reckon the correct version should be released in a week or so !!!

We shall have to see what happens !!

Cheers

Nevy P
That's funny...there's a wonky version still available on Kies and it's not been pulled...how they must be laughing at Orange UK.

Well I installed the questionable version of GB about a week ago and initially had an issue with the data connection which was resolved just by switch off and on. The phone is performing well with no issues.

More worryingly the battery life had dropped markedly from 2.2.1 so I decided to do a factory reset (3 button) drain the battery completely and charge over night.

What you see below defies explanation. The battery was still showing 71%!!!

Now as usual I switch off things like BT, 3G, wireless unless I use them and I appreciate I ain't been using my phone too much over the last couple of days, few calls, text messages, checked Twitter and Facebook and updated a few apps but even so I've never had battery life like this.

i have updated to 2.3.4 and the battery is amazing now i get to day out of mine even useing it with wifi on 5 hours a day and making calls and sending txt its ace

I installed this 'dodgy' version through Kies the very day news broke about it being available - same issue as others, no data connection.

Simply did a factory restore through the recovery screen and all is well again.

I saw a note above where someone said they factory restored back to a previous version of Android, but this is definately not the case, factory restore will reset your phone to the last installed version of Android which in my case was 2.3.3 from Kies.

As mentioned, I have had no further problems and general performance has been excellent.

:)

cant say for sure, I usually use my phone while connected via usb at work (tunein radio ;-)

It feels longer, but that could just be me wanting it to be so - definitely not seen any negative effects on battery.

I'll charge it full and see how i get on and report back

really gave my phone a hammering over the last 24 hours from about 80% battery, left wifi on all day today, browsed a couple of youtube videos, facebook, bit of browsing and shed loads of twicca - battery still showing at 32%

I'm definately seeing a massive (in relative terms) increase in battery after the update to 2.3.3 - very happy :D

Wasn't the "official" update meant to come out yesterday (20th June)? I haven't seen or heard anything about it yet...

Yesterday i updated to Gingerbread 2.3.3 on the Kies website, on both my galaxy s and wifes, who has the same phone.

My phone works fine on data, but my wifes does not.

It seems odd that 1 works fine, and 1 does not

I have been on the phone to Samsung over the past week or so and here is an update.

They said that they are aware of the 'faulty' update and again stated that it should not installed.

The good news is that the 'correct' version will be released soon ( about a week)

The bad news is that they expect the revised firmware to carry the same version numbers (PDAJV7, PHONEJV2, CSCJV5)

Ofcourse this will make it impossible to know which version Kies is offering for update !!!

They are basically asking Orange customers to phone them (Samsung) to confirm that the revised version is on Kies and not to update if they are unsure.

We shall have to see what happens this coming week - i shall wait for a while and phone them back.

I will keep you posted on any developments !!

Nevy P

p.s

It must be coming soon - Samsung have recently put a Gingerbread Manual (Orange version) for the Galaxy S on their website !!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for your update Nevy P - this whole thing's a big mess up. I'll keep looking on Kies as to if there's an update to the released faulty version this coming week. Thanks again.

Hi guys,

I was one of the people who thought it was out and updated to 2.3. I had the data problems that most people were having, which meant putting it into flight mode and then back online again, or rebooting the phone. Also the vibration intensity on the texts and calls hugely increased! It was louder than the ringtone at the lowest level! The weird thing was that a week before I updated, I kept losing the data connection, and my wireless reception had become poor on the phone. Maybe this was just a coincidence and the phone was buggered anyway!

When I rang up Orange, as I was having a problem with my Orange Mail app, he said you're on 2.3 which is not supported, and Orange have told Samsung to take it down. This was last Wednesday now, but its still on the software. To rectifiy this they sent me a replacement handset with 2.2 back on, and everything is OK.

If Samsung are keeping the same fw revision numbers, how the hell are we supposed to know which ones correct! Orange really need to give us updates on the Galaxy S page! Shocking!!!

You are lucky that they sent you a replacement handset !!

When i phoned Orange they told me to take it to a Samsung Service Centre to get it re-flashed back to 2.2.1 (which i did)!!!

Mind you they have already replaced my handset - my first one stopped receiving e-mails after i updated to 2.2.1 from 2.2 !!!!

So i suppose they would not send me another one for that reason !!!

Orange are basically denying responsibility - stating it is Samsung's error and Samsung should sort the phones out !!!

They can't replace everybodys handset i suppose !!

If i hear anything from Samsung i will post it here

Cheers

To be honest with you Orange CS is crap. It depends who you are talking to at the other end of the line, some people will get things sorted for you, others will take you through the same thing five times then try put you through only to realise they've cut you off! Its frustrating! I'm thinking twice about staying with them next year, you do get good enough loyalty discount, but I suppose somethings gotta suffer somewhere to balance out the costs and in this case its their CS!

By the way, can you access the Mail client by Orange on the phone?

Mits

Yes i can access Orange Mail on my phone OK with 2.2.1 !!

So do you mean that your phone with 2.2 can not set up Orange Mail ?

When i first got my Galaxy S late last year Orange Mail would not work !!

Orange said that it was due to the fact that i had my old Orange phone number transfered to my new phone and this had stopped the mail server from connecting my phone.

Have you already set up an account and you get a message saying something like 'cannot connect to server' - if so i get this quite frequently when i am in a 'low' reception area - Pop/imap has a good 'reception' all the time.

By the way the 'push' email system that is used is actually run by Nokia from their servers - so Orange have to contact them to fix things !!!

They just have to reset your account if you cannot even create an email account due to a server glich.

I presume that your Pop/Imap email is OK ?

To be honest Pop/Imap receives emails a bit quicker than Orange Mail anyway - you just have to set it up manually !!

I use both systems on my phone

Im running 2.2.1.

I get the message 'uknown error while retrieving available connectors' after it validates my number.
orange have now confirmed its something to do with my account have escalated it to 3rd line. They said they will get back to me in 3 days... Lets see what happens! Pop/imap works fine but I prefer to have it pushed via orange mail.

Mits

That is the same error message that I recieved when I first got my SGS.

They just have to reset you Orange Mail account on the Nokia servers ,it is possible that some minor detail is incorrect and your phone and the server wont connect.

They should be able to sort it in a day or two !!

Cheers

Nevy P

p.s you need to keep checking your phone and trying to create an email account - because the connection error will be fixed but Orange wont bother telling you!!

Nevy P,

My accounts screwed up! on 'My Account' through Orange world it doesn't even state what services are included on my plan, as Im on panther it should list the services but its just blank..and also the CS guy confirmed that on their billing system it shows that I have no bundles and I had an Orange Email trial which has expired, which is bizzare because it should be a part of my plan and I dont get charged for them when I use them. Lets see if it gets sorted!

This is part of the 'glich' which occurs with Orange Mail.

Mine was the same.

Instead of getting Orange Mail with your plan - you get a 14 day trial by mistake !!

When it expires you get the 'unknown errors while trying to receive available connectors' message.

Orange reckoned my email screwed up because they put my old phone number onto my new phone and the mail server then gave me a trial version instead of the full version.

Don't worry Orange will be able to sort this one out !!!

Cheers

Got a call from orange yesterday but missed the call so I rang back and then went through some of the same stuff again with 2nd line support and she eventually found an action on my account which she then replied back to. 3rd/4th line support asked wetha I had tried deleting the app... You cannot delete the preinstalled app!! And I already have tried downloading the update! The first chap I spoke to clearly saw it was a problem with my account!! Ahh.

Lets see how long it takes for it to be sorted!

There is still no news about 2.3.3 for Orange, i'm afraid.

I have phoned both Orange and Samsung and they both tell me that it will be available soon.
(Samsung reckon in another week or two)

Oddly enough there is a new version of Kies available which STILL has the dodgy update version showing !!! (confirmed by Samsung)

Samsung cannot confirm if the correct update will carry the same version numbers (jv7,jv2,jv5) or will be changed to something else.

So i will get confirmation prior to updating !

So i will let you know if i get any more news !!!

Like me you are back at 2.2.1 so we will be OK when the update arrives !!

Orange are concerned that people who installed the dodgy version will have to get their phones flashed by Samsung to the new version - as Kies will probably not offer them an update - but we will have to wait and see.

Has Orange fixed your Orange Mail yet ???

Cheers

Nevy P

Nevy P,

Unfortunatley not...I called Orange again to chase it up but there's still no news!

Orange/Samsung have really shafted their customers on this one! The least they could do is change the fw revision numbers so people that have the dodgy update could atleast update to the correct fw...instead people are having to take their phones to the shops to.get them reflashed!!

Cheers for the info Nevy P.

I had the same problem, technical support is crap they sent me three replacement phone and even when i said this is update issue instead of downgrading the software sent me replacement again.
my phone loosing data connection as soon as i use GPS.
Does anyone know where i can download the 2.2.1 orange stock rom?

This isn't funny anymore...Orange and Samsung mess up and we get annoyed waiting a long time for a solution. I don't even know whether I can be bothered to speak to Orange support. From reading this thread they don't seem very helpful.

What do people think I should do? contact Orange and give them some stick or just wait...and wait...and wait for a solution?
