Help Warning ! Official Gingerbread Released For Orange UK

I totally agree! Its getting stupid now. I rang up cs yesterday re my email problem and the guy said it could take a week or a month to sort out as they dont know whats causing the problem. As for the gingerbread update its ridiculous!!!!

All,

Just thought I'd share with you guys...I have decided not to wait for Orange Re the gingerbread f/w! Flashed to the latest 2.3.4 from samfirmwares and the phone is working superb! I even get the H for the data connection (HSDPA) which I have never got with their f/w! It certainly feels faster, but I don't truly know if its supposed to be faster than just displaying 3g or 3g+?

The phone certainly is snappier! I will post results of any problems I encounter, especially the data ones! Currently its switching between 3G and H with no problems.

Browser is also very fast!!

Ooo I'm very tempted indeed, is it easy to do or could a dufus mess it up?

Morning! im currently sending this from my galaxy s. browsing is faster and I have the follwoing issues

poor wifi reception. prior to me upgrading from froyo wifi signal was stronger. flashed a couple of new modems but its still the same so reverted back to whatcame with the rom

vibration intensity is high when receiving calls and msgs. i thought this was just with the crappy orange rom bt it seems like its a gingerbread thing.

will give you further updates.

Updating roms can brick your phone so you have to be careful however I believe it aint that easy to brick them

as long as you have access to the three button download combo then you can always flash a working firmware with Odin.

To get into download mode turn the phone off. Then hold volumme down + home + power buttons together and the next screen you see should be a yellow triangle with and android digging and the words downloading... do not turn off Target!!!

If you can't get to this screen then I recommend not flashing anything until you fix this as without this access if a flash goes bad then the phone will have to be sent to samsung to be fixed.

To fix this see this thread on XDA

any issues just post on that thread the original poster is very helpful. I had to do this with my phone too. It is the hairiest thing I have done with my phone as if this goes wrong (very small chance of this if instructions are followed) then the phone needs to go to samsung.

Another update:

Battery life is incredible with the JVQ 2.3.4 Gingerbread rom! I have data turned on throughout the day and wifi in the evening (which has been around 6 hours now)

35mins of bluetooth which was switched on in my car (bluetooth handsfree)

Browsing the net throughout the day, receveived about 15emails, with vibrating turned on.

Received a couple of calls

and the battery is still at 50%, usually with froyo it would be dead by now! Total time the device has been on is 13h29mins from charge.

Overall a good rom, no data problems only the minor wifi issue and the phone vibrating like mad when you receive calls and texts!

Cheers!

Is it now "safe" to update via Kies to the Orange 2.3 update? What about those people who have already updated to the "unofficial" version - is the phone working properly now? I remember people saying they had data connectivity problems...

I've also seen a message on the Orangehelpers twitter page, saying that the update was out about a week ago. Would be nice of Orange to confirm that on their website (assuming it's true)...

I've been running the 'iffy' version of 2.3 since it was released 'by accident' some time ago.

Personally I've not had any problems and have had a massive improvement in battery life.

Some other users have had issues with data connection though.

So, is the official Orange Gingerbread release available now? I, like many others, downloaded the unofficial version albeit in good faith. If it is, then I guess I'll need to get flashed back to an earlier version as KEIS is saying I already have the latest version.

As a newbe, advice would be appreciated.

I'm still waiting for the "all-clear" before downloading this firmware. I've already had enough trouble with the SGS and Kies.

I had the same problem. I contacted Orange on 150 then options 1,3,2 and spoke to support who gave me the APN internet setting.
Name Orange GPRS
APN= orangeinternet
MCC= 234
MNC= 33
Authentication=PAP
APN type=internet
Save the settings then poweroff the phone, remove battery and SIM card. Wait a minute, put back together and power on phone.
The phone now works perfectly. Hope this helps.

Having the same problem with data. Updated to GB but data just won't turn on which is incredibly frustrating. I've tried the switch off and on but to no avail. I don't know what to do. :(
I'm hoping that I'll wake up tomorrow and it's all magically working.

Okay, I surfed around on some other forums and found a solution to the data not turning on. At least, it worked for me.
Navigate to Settings -> Wireless and network -> Mobile Networks -> Network Mode and select WCDMA only. After I selected that, the data turned on perfectly fine through the notification bar. It was a tiny bit slow turning green so I did turn it off and on a few times before I realised that it was working.

I'm not sure what WCDMA network mode means, I'm not technical at all, but I changed the Network Mode back to GSM/WCDMA (auto mode) and the data still turns on and off fine.

I hope this helps. :)

I like many others upgraded my software and have problems with the data connection. I need to turn phone on press data connection turn phone off then back on for the data connection to work.

Per the last thread from Fazerella I amended the network mode to WCDMA and the data connection came on no bother, still worked when I changed it back to GSM/WCDMA (auto mode). However, I have turned my phone off but when turn back on the data connection still doesn't work but will come on when I change the network mode which is a lot easier than constantly rebooting phone. Thanks for the advice.

Has anyone actually heard anything from Orange about the "fix" they are supposed to be releasing? It seems to have gone very quiet...

I've been stuck on 2G internet for over a month and have lost all patience. The suggestion to change from 2G to 3G does work sometimes - but then it usually stops working after an hour or so when I next pull my phone out.

I guess we should assume that there is no magic update being worked on by Orange. Has anyone taken matters into their own hands and flashed a stock firmware? I've seen some guides - looks tempting but also quite confusing. How do I choose the firmware files that I should be using? (And is there a way to revert back to Orange's firmware if I ever need to get my phone serviced...?)

I gave up waiting for Orange and have flashed my phone to Gingerbread 2.3.5. This has got rid of the iffy Orange apps and I'm very happy with my phone! :D

I flashed from Orange to v2.3.4 recently. What a revelation. Everything works like it should. No hanging, Data connections work all the time, memory management is great, no Orange apps loading even though I don't want to use them.

Happy chappie at last! :-)

I followed instructions from this site, was very easy, even for an old duffer like me.

There is now a similar site to flash upgrade to v2.3.5
