Ok testers, here is an experimental version. It is the newest TWRP v2.8.6.0. I had to trim down the tree, and use heavier compression on the kernel to make it fit on this device. Let me know how it goes

Everything works great and this time I didn't have to reboot the recovery before flashing the ROM

I believe the rom flashing problem was due to selinux not getting set to permissive. This is a known bug when building TWRP on CM sources. I modified CM12 source to allow this in the the most recent build posted in the OP

It sounds like there is someone willing to work on AOSP. It was mentioned a while back in one of the threads. I even posted my device tree for them.

Perfectly safe. Use flashify to back up your stock recovery then install twrp. If you want to go back. Just flash stock again.
