watch out for music app data use

has anyone else noticed just how much data the music app uses? I was just using navigation today and playing music on my phone, not streaming it, and when I get back home I was surprised my data use jumped up over 250 mb, it was at .001gb when I left since the cycle started yesterday (no data with the outage lol) I was only out for about an hour and music was on about 20min. So I try to figure out what is using all that data tonight and when I check battery info and click on the music app I see it has received 400mb of data today. That's insane, like I said I was not streaming from motocast, playing off the Sd card. After some testing it seems to be the recommendations settings in live music. If this is on and music is open it uses about 10 mb every 30 seconds to a minute. Lyrics uses very little, that's why I had it on in the first place, but turning off share music data , recommendations and news will put a stop to the data sucking and I think it will still download album art too, but I let that sit the first time I got the phone so it downloaded that stuff over WiFi so don't know if it is still on, there is no specific option to turn off album art. And of course you can Turn it all of by unclicking live music info. anyway, those of us on limited data need to watch this so just wanted to let everyone know what might be causing all that data use. I like the music app but what the hell with this kind of data use just for recommending similar music.

You can turn features for downloading music info off somewhere in the app.

My Music>Menu>Settings>Live Music Information.

Yep. It is a hog when left on. Even when turning that switch off though, the app can get "busy" with some index action and still seems to want to hang around active and eat CPU clock.

I froze it, but the next best thing is turning that evil live option OFF. Both that app and the gallery function (since part of the media tasks) can get hoggy.

No kidding, there was a problem with my FIOS connection today so I tethered to my phone to get some work done while it was fixed. About an hour on the web downloading and uploading files and browsing a bit only used 18 mb total (up & Down). No idea what that music app is doing to use 200 mb while the music was playing for only 20 mins. I just froze it and now I am using Uber Music, it still downloads images but uses a lot less data to do so.

I just posted about this. I first heard about the Music player and it issues when rushmore posted about it some time ago.

I turned of all the live stuff and it was still using data. Maybe a reboot was needed, dont really know. System Panel app helped me see it easy. And I went back to using Power AMP for my music. I do like how the Moto music player does lyrics, playing while the song is playing. Very nice.

Just checked...the music player isnt using data anymore. I just never used it again. Think I did a force stop or something. I didnt freeze it ....yet....with Ti Backup.

I just opened the built in music app for the first time just to go into settings and turn the live data off then backed out of the app. Now the app is running in the background using tons of CPU and constantly sending and receiving data over 3G. I watched it for five minutes and it didn't die down. This is something that could definitely impact someone's battery life.

^Like when I had my Droid 1 and we were trying to block OTA updates. Some of us, the OTA just kept downloading again after we tried to block it. Affected battery life like crazy. I forgot what we eventually had to do to stop it from downloading.

If you turn the live settings off and then reboot the device as jroc mentions, you should be good. If rooted, freeze it and if not rooted, hide the app so no accident opening it. Launcher Pro is free and offers the option to hide apps. Need to use LP then, of course, or the app icon is back.

I know that rebooting the phone or ending the app process fixes it , what is cause for concern is the fact that the app kept using data nonstop after you change the setting that tells it not to.

What app were you guys using to see if see the music app was using up a lot of data?

jroc above said "system panel". i just looked it up and i think he means "SystemPanelLite Task Manager". i'm getting it right now and i'm gonna watch this for a few days.

i tried power amp previously but preferred the stock music player...but if it's really gonna whoop my battery, i'll learn to like power amp.

Thanks man for letting me know.

I think I need to root so I can freeze some of this stuff. Dont plan on taking the OTA anyways.

Cheers.

You will want the OTA, since the data connection issues and other things like I HOPE: The HDMI connection causing freezing and then reboots. The rogue music app needs fixing too.

All you need to do is unfreeze the apps. There is a batch option to unfreeze all. Do the update and then refreeze them. Just do NOT uninstall any stock apps. The only apps that can be zapped are the user installed space apps: Lets Golf 2, Madden, Goto Meeting and Blockbuster.

Do NOT use Titanium to unintall apps, since you could zap a system stock app by accident.

Not only the music app, but a lot of bloatware like Social status and such (assuming you do not use that crap)

Yeah I forgot about that. Been a long time since I've had a phone with blur and bloat on it.

Is there a list of safe apps to delete/freeze for the Razr yet?

I hear you man. These are the only apps I've uninstalled. I only just got to rooting it last night. Have not had time to freeze anything just yet.

What data issues?

I most likely will not take the OTA since it normally kills root, and use custom roms etc. I mean we have ICS already in the works, so I will wait.

Will be more adventurous of course once we have an sbf though.

Cheers!

it's only been a day since i started monitoring it, but i'm not seeing the music app use large amounts of data or cpu power. then i had a thought... when you guys are done listening to your music, do you just hit pause, then hit the home button and get on with your day OR do you hit the back button a few times to get all the way out of the music app? just curious.
