Help weather widget not working

Lurker
Hi all,

I'm new to Android phones so please bear with me.

my front screen clock/weather widget is blank. there's no weather updates at all even when I open up the widget and click on update. it would never show the correct town I was in anyway and I had to set it Birmingham instead of Smethwick (where I am) because it kept showing I was in west Bromwich which annoyed me.

can someone tell me if I'm doing something wrong and also how to fix this.

many thanks
Manny Xxx :(

The stock weather widget is just totally random stuff anyway, the met office have a mobile site wich is very accurate and run from the UK, not some dusty bowl in the states that provide the UK with 4 generation rehashed satellite data that's 4 hours old by the time its gets here.

Hi,

I am new to Andriod too so dont worry. Regarding the weather widget, it could be the fact that weather app only recognises main cities/towns.

Regarding the weather have you tried switching on Wifi or Mobile Network? I switched on wifi and selected the 'refresh' circle logo to get latest weather.

If not already done so, switch on Wifi or Mobile Network(if you want to use 3G), Open up Weather/Clock Widget by tapping on it , then do a manual refresh, then press the back key/Home key and see if it that makes a difference.

Hope this helps.

I have mine set to current location and like anything else it either works or it doesn't. When I go to town its usually correct but when I'm at my house it tells me I'm in a town that's 30 miles south lol. For the weather side its close enough. I just learned to tolerate it

That doesn't make any sense since the weather widget does not use GPS data for updates.

The weather widget gets updates from a weather service after using the cellular network location service (mobile network), which is only accurate to several kilometers usually. So for it to show a town or city that is some distance away is ok since weather info doesn't need to be GPS precise, just an approximate area for info. For this to work, you need to make sure you have the Settings, Location, "Use wireless networks" option enabled. This turns on the cellular location service.

Having said that, there were two issues with the weather updates, one is the server must be up and running to provide updated data (there have been some issues in the last month or two that seem to be resolved), and there may have been a bug in Froyo that didn't always allow updates - it would work intermittently.

I use the weather widget, with it set to "current location" along with several other locations I like to monitor, and it's been working fine since I updated my firmware to generic v2.29.405.5 - so it does work properly.
:)

To those having problem with the weather widget, lately it has been having issues with the server client, this has been mentioned alot espepcially in the 405.2 update thread.

Weather services use satellites to collate data, which was my point. Data taken by the MET Office in the UK is first hand, empirical ground station data and thus would be far more reliable than other organisations based outside the UK having an educated guess. Last night Google weather was reporting -6 in Stone, Staffordshire, UK, actual temp fluctuated from 1 to -2 depending on your source. ;)

Sorry, I thought you meant the GPS receiver in the Desire was used for the weather widget. My bad.
Anywho, the widget is working just fine here, which is my point.
:D
