This is something that's annoys me...

I do a lot of Google searches for Android related questions amongst other things. I come across forums where you have to be a member just to see a link of any kind that one of their members posted!

Just to let THEM know, I mostly skip your forums in the Google search results because I refuse to be sucker punched into your forum just to grab a link.

I've done it in the past, and now am a member of forums I have forgotten the name of just to get a link. I can understand a file download, but a link? C'mon man! lol

I think that's an absurd way to try and corral new members.

I agree it may be a little much, but in the end that's there way of doing things.
A guest shouldn't be able to go anywhere, but at least be able to go to some parts of the forum and and click on links. Every forum has there way of doing things and I respect that. :)

More times than not, I just skip over these types of forums in search results. :)

Amen sistah! i agree! and i hate sites that tells me that something is FREE but you have to enter a credit card info to become a member. There was this PBS channel (8 in my area) where i wanted to get some of their "FREE" itallian recipes and dessserts! Guess what? I started filling out the FREE membership and there was actually a "SCREEN TWO" for fillign out.... for a Recoipe site? Two pages to fill out... the second page was CREDIT CARD INFO stating i wont get charged, yada yada........ i hate it when this happens!

And A N O T H E R thing! I hate sites such as news forums where you have to logno to FACEBOOK to post a comment on a news article. How "anonymous" is that? I mean, if I want to post a "snarky" aboit the arficle (or) about someones response to the article, I dont need my facebook info fed into the hands of whomever! (and I dont post my real name, place of work, phone,, DOB, SS#, Cell#, email, then "friend" co workwres so that and their crap bites my hairy monkey-tail and gets MEEE fired)....hayale naw!

I agree... It's extremely annoying, and I will not sign up with places that do that.

I feel the same way. I don't mind using forums and sites that require Disqus. It lets you use a pseudonym.

Here in China to join any forum, you have to verify who you are, so there's like no anonymity. It's the law here. Usually it's done with the forum or website sending a SMS to your phone with a code, that you enter when registering. You MUST give your mobile number, and to buy a SIM you have to show ID.

When you go to an internet bar in China you have to show ID. Although I've never been asked to show ID, probably because I'm obviously foreign.

I suspect the US Govt. would like the above to happen as well. So they know who you are, i.e. no anonymity on the interwebs.

Thats a bit scary to think your actual personal info being stored on more databases the more you join a forum.

Whats scary here is we are already tracked by ip address. To add personal info is a hacker's dream database waiting to be mined.

Maybe one country is at least thinking otherwise:
http://www.techeye.net/ - it's on the front page
BTW - is there a smiley for tongue-in-cheek?

There's something else that happens in China, with the free Wi-Fi you find at Starbucks, McDonald's etc. There's always a landing page and you have to verify who you are, usually it's done with your mobile number. It can problem for tourists, who usually don't have a Chinese mobile number, and the landing/verification pages are nearly always only in Chinese.

I hate sites that want you to LOGIN with a Facebook or Twitter account. I used to read Digg just for something to do. They reorganized and now you can only login with FB, Twitter or G+. Yahoo still has the option of your own login. I'm guessing there's a few other sites that don't have their own login but use the big 3.

No thanks.

I normally log in with my FB, say what I need to say, then go back to my FB and remove the access. :p

It's probably just less work for them to maintain than having their own logins.

Now as I don't have an FB, Twitter or G+ account it's telling me that they don't want me. Fair enough, I'll usually decide that the feeling is mutual
;)

You're right. Seem like more and more sites are getting this way. Went to download a file from a forum, and the service the guy used to host the file demanded you make an account, or use facebook or twitter.... lol

I don't want to. I do have a FB, Twitter, Yahoo, accounts they are all under different names and email addresses. I rarely use the same name twice.

I agree too. I used to participate in a local news online comments on a news stories. Since theyve switched to Facebook logon, ive ceased going to that site.

I bet I know why, on my local news site comment section, people get pretty nasty and racist.

Maybe they are trying to curb it by using a facebook logon, to be more accountable for you comments. I know one can make a fake account and all, the average joe isn't going to think of that though. :)

FB is now partnering and running comments thru Avast. If FB is scanning all this stuff, then the stations probably don't have to or aren't liable for malware or other sundry misuse of posting.
