Hi, all. I bought a Samsung Droid Charge (Verizon) on eBay. I couldn't activate it. Neither could tech support. Neither could anyone from the Verizon store. The ESN was clean. Since I can't attach a photo, here's what showed up as soon as I turned the phone on.

CHANNEL: 0
SERIAL MODE: SIO
S/W Verizon: SCH-I510.FP8
Baseband Ver: SCH-I510.FP8
LTE Ver: (B2:E,B4:E)
H/W Version: I510.05
U/N: 76200001131534

A hard/factory reset didn't work. A new sim card didn't work. The folks at the store seem to think someone tampered with the software -- either an attempt to root the phone or install a different Android OS.

Is there anything I can do to fix this, or should I use it as a paperweight instead? Thanks so much.

It sounds as if the folks at the store are right. Now ask them where the store with the service center is. Ask the techs there if they can flash the stock ROM into the phone for you. (They'd be doing you a huge favor, it's not something they have to do, so be extra special nice about asking.) At the same time, if there's actually something wrong with the phone, they'd probably be able to tell almost immediately.

And contact ebay. If the phone was sold as working, they can do something about adjusting the price so that you paid about what a paper weight is worth. (Don't forget to leave feedback once you've determined the actual state of the phone. People actually read the comments before bidding or buying.)
