Thanks @AFX79, that makes sense as several of the others to report this message appear to be Vodafone customers too. A call 191 for an explanation from Customer Services would seem in order.

Do any of you get odd texts/calls from a number such as 888-343-2896? that's been happening to me over the last week. I've just deleted/ignored the calls hoping they would stop after realizing they're getting no response. i dealt with robocalls from some insurance co. on another line and i could not stop them because they never offered a way to talk to a human and just kept coming, so i try never to answer calls/respond to texts from unknown numbers, hoping the lack of response would have them assuming they're not reaching a 'live' number

It's a toll-free number, probably some telemarketing thing, health insurance, charity subscriptions, shit like that. I get them as well here occasionally. If your number is on a telemarketing database somewhere, or not unlisted, they'll probably keep coming. Is there any mandatory "do not call" register type thing in the US, you can get yourself on?

I used to live in Phoenix AZ and had my number registered with tons of businesses... for a while, all was okay, then along came some stuff that required my personal "real estate" business dealings to be posted in some "public places" and that is when the fun began...

I finally figured out if I answer the call and then hit the 5 digit or the # key about 5 times in a row, the calling computer goes away and don't bother me anymore.

But, my phone number was in a major telemarketing database and I was hit with numerous telemarketers. My first instinct was to just block all calls not in my Contacts List.

But, my wife is type II diabetic and we have a lot of medical offices calling us from numbers I don't have in my Contacts List.... so blocking mode was out.

I finally just had the phone number changed to a rural area code, and am guarding it fastidiously... knock on wood, only a few random miss-dials so far.
