Weird voice command / 3.5 headphone jack issue

I've looked but can't find any help with this so I decided to finally ask. It's something I noticed with my last phone, a Sony xperia x10, and something ive noticed with my new phone, the HTC vivid. I plug my phone into my car's speakers with a 3.5 mm cable when I drive so that I can listen to music and talk hands free. The problem seems to be that when I plug my audio cable in to the headphone jack the voice recognition stops working well. At first it will say it hears no audio, but if I yell loud enough sometimes it will work. It's something that I've seen with both my android phones consistently. Voice recognition is fine otherwise. Any idea what's going on or how to fix it? Thanks.

Wild guess: is you have that option, have you tried setting it speaker-phone?
