Welcome news re: robocalls

Kind of thin on details at this point, but it’s a huge step in the right direction.

"If there is one thing in our country today that unites Republicans and Democrats, liberals and conservatives, socialists and libertarians, vegetarians and carnivores, Ohio State and Michigan fans, it is that they are sick and tired of being bombarded by unwanted robocalls," said FCC Chairman Ajit Pai during the commission's monthly meeting prior to the 5-0 vote to approve the rule. "My message to the American people today is simple: We hear you, and we are on your side."

I often mess with them.

I ask if they can get me some good coke.

I answer in a pretend foreign language.

I'll say: It's done, but there's a lot of blood. This will be our last communication.
You're right up my alley with that humor of yours! :)

I generally ignore calls I don't recognize, but every so often I'll pick up for the fun of it.

My ABSOLUTE favorite is when they start out with anything involving micro$oft/window$. (Note for those who don't know, I'm Linux ONLY.) I play along, letting them think I'm a clueless window$ user who's buying in to their shit, like they've put something on my computer and if I don't pay $X they'll wipe all my data.

When I'm barely able to control bursting out laughing, I lower the boom on them. Pow! :D

Yes, anything would be appreciated!

My landline gets bombarded by robocalls daily. I no longer answer unless I recognize the caller; I let them hear my message that includes "we don't take sales calls..."

Why they haven't hit my cell phone is a mystery!

From the article:

"More than 20 U.S. senators have called on the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to reconsider a proposal that could exponentially increase robocalls. The bureau, in an update to the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, would allow debt collectors to send unlimited texts and emails to consumers, as well as call them seven times a week per debt."

Wow! That's outrageous. :o

I just answered a call because caller ID said 'Private caller,' and sometimes when my cousin calls she forgets to unblock her info, and that's how it appears.

No, it wasn't my cousin. But I found out that because I've failed to pay them, they're going to disconnect my IP address! :o Oh, heavens, what to do, what to do?!

The recording wanted me to press 1. I hung up.

I got one last year who told me that "your internet is infected with error"!
I'd always sworn that if I got one of these fake tech support calls I'd try to see how long I could string them along for, but I blew it by bursting out laughing at that point.

I mirror their accent and pretend I'm a scammer as well and tell them to watch their back and look behind them.

I still get Asian dialect robocalls on all my phones.
On NextDoor, we talk about that all the time--but we assumed we were getting calls in Chinese because of where we live.

Here in Arcadia, there's been a huge influx of Asians over the last 20+ years. I used to get phone calls and visits--constantly--from Asian Realtors wanting to buy my property for their clients in China.

They're not interested in the house--it would fall to a wrecking ball immediately, and a McMansion 4 or 5 times its size would go up in its place. I finally told each of them I will NEVER sell this property (which I own outright, so their multi-million dollar cash offers don't impress me), AND I've stipulated in my trust that my daughter can't either; it must be passed down. That shut them up. No more calls/visits! :D

I'm urban. Always had White, Asian and Jewish neighbors. They lived a block from me. We went to school together a half a century ago.
Probably a Boston, Roxbury thing though.
I'm suburban, and have always been.

Because of where I've lived...this is kind of embarrassing to say...I've basically only had white neighbors--and now, Asian. My high school had a student body of ≈3,300. There were a few Asians back then, a few Hispanics, and ONE, count 'em, one black student.

Arcadia has changed since then, with Asians so coveting our school system and city that they've driven prices up. (I turned down a firm, cash offer of $1.7M last year--for my 2-bedroom house!) They buy a perfectly nice house for millions, raze it, then spend millions more putting up a McMansion that takes up most of the property.
