Welp...I may have caused endless blue screens

So the other day, I decided to move from a dual boot of Fedora 20 and Windows 8.1 to a dual boot of Arch Linux and Windows 8.1. In that process, I was cleaning up my boot partition of unneeded files (from previous installs) and I think I may have deleted a folder that contained files that Windows seems to require to boot properly. The blue screen flashes by for like a second before the computer restarts. Does anyone know of a way to fix this (short of reinstalling Windows). The only thing I've found is this which I may download and try to see if I can fix it via that.

I've actually done the bootrec commands already: they didn't seem to do anything. GRUB doesn't even show Windows as an option; instead, I have to enter the EFI settings screen and select the Windows bootloader's option for boot override (which starts the boot process, shows a splash screen of the manufacturer, then blue screen). I know there's a way to add Windows, I will check into that later. Right now, I'm more concerned about getting Windows to be able to fully boot again

EDIT: The thing I mentioned I'd try in the OP? I downloaded it and dd'd it to a flash drive and it isn't being picked up by the EFI firmware at all
 
Legacy boot is definitely off (I installed windows under EFI)

Edit: there doesn't appear to be an option for legacy boot anyway

For that matter, secure boot is also off
 
Sigh....most boot-repair stuff has no idea how to handle uefi, largely because most Linux guides tell you to disable it out of spite for secure boot instead of learning how to work with it. EasyBCD doesn't know how to deal with it either.

Best guess would be to use Linux to restore the necessary files to the EFI partition, in the Windows folder.
 
JWell, as I have access to the system recovery options Windows provides after a failed boot, I'm attempting a system restore

How? By extracting from an install disc?

And the system restore failed
 
I'm out and about today, but I could pull the EFI files from my partition and zip em up later.
 
I can, but as I said earlier, I'm out and about today and can't get to my system (family birthday party for mother in law.) Will get to it ASAP, though.

Can you get to the shift-restart menu's troubleshooting options (troubleshoot>advanced options>startup settings>restart) in order to try safe mode, disable automatic restart, etc?

Yes and safe mode brings up the same blue screen (specifically the one coming up on any attempt to boot is this one).
 
ARRGGGHHH. Getting the INACCESSIBLE BOOT DEVICE error usually happens when your BIOS screws up and starts making your SATA drives run in IDE legacy mode, or vice versa. During windows install, whatever mode your drive is in, windows locks onto and has tunnel vision, refusuing to recheck in case it changed.

So, in short, check your bios for anything screwy. How was your removal of fedora executed? Was it done via Win8 Disk management, or through gparted/other linux tool? Your partition table itself may have been damaged, and that's enough to confuse windows, apparently.

Secondly did you do that whole replace-the-hardcoded-windows-efi-boot-file-with-grubx64 trick? You may need to undo that.

My removal of Fedora was done by using cgdisk to delete its partitions and then recreate its partitions.

To your second point: no, not that I know of

I typically use Disk Management to nuke my linux partitions in preparation for a re-install, it seems to help windows not panic over partition changes.

That partition layout seems fine. I'm going to assume by "gap" you mean the lack of sda4, and furthermore, I'm gonna assumne that sda4 is a swap partition and not listed on purpose. Am I correct in that you are indeed using a UEFI system with an EFI partition at sda1?

Has the layout of the drive always been EFI>Linux>Windows, or did the windows partition get shoved over? If it got shoved, that can be enough to cause it. Perhaps the partition location gets hardcoded to the .efi file at installation time?

Finally, I'm gonna link you to this, the same thing I gave to Jeffboyardee in his Rollback Vs Grub thread, as it seems to be a pretty good checklist for how fussy windows can be when it comes to partition editing.

Yeah, Windows has always been at the end of the drive (and it booted fine before I switched from Fedora to Arch. The ESP is indeed sda1
 
This is starting to sound pretty bad, like, hardware-failure bad, if everything from the windows side checks out, bootloader and all.

Can you force any sort of physical/surface disk check on the windows partition? Perhaps boot the Win8 installer > Recovery console > sfc /scannow to check windows filesystem integrity for sure?
 
Well, if it was hardware failure, Linux probably wouldn't work either. I'll try sfc later

Odd. What happens if you go for a pure sfc /scannow, with specifying directories?

You shouldn't be scanning the EFI partition anyway. If the scan reports everything in the Windows install directory is fine, then that alone would indicate a malformed boot file on the EFI partition.

Well if I try that from the install disc, it will fail because the install needing scanning is offline.
