I just grabbed the 8>8.1 update from the store, so I can probably give another listing of my 8.1 EFI boot files, it should be more relevant to your situation than the 8.0 listing I gave.

I'm off to go make sure I can still boot into linux mint. I get the feeling microsoft routinely nukes and rebuilds the EFI partition every time you do a reset, refresh, or 8.1 upgrade, so i may be missing my Mint EFI files. :banghead:

If it did break, you should be able to boot from the Mint live cd and fix it manually (perhaps by mounting and chrooting into the broken system then fixing up GRUB (assuming you use GRUB).

Indeed, that is my plan if I have to repair the EFI listing. Haven't done it yet 'cause I got sidetracked reading about software-based SoundFont solutions I can use when I migrate my MIDI editing setup from my old desktops to my laptop.

Though, I suspect I have to target the grub-EFI install to /dev/sda2 (the EFI partition itself), rather than /dev/sda, since that's what I had to specify during the original manual install of Mint 16....

Posting from the Linux side now. Looks like Microsoft's ego didn't get in the way this time, The last time I did a Win8 Refresh, it definitely nuked and rebuilt the EFI partition to be microsoft-only (I guess I should expect them to think that you would only use windows), instead of being surgical about replacing win8 boot files.

This time around, no EFI rebuilding was done.

Alright, one last suggestion....but you're not gonna like it.

Kill the linux partition and expand the windows partition to reabsorb it using gparted. It may be that Windows thinks the hard drive its installed to is *actual size*, not *partition size*, and is therefore triggering a corruption flag somewhere.

Don't think that's it. The blue screen is an "INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE"

Well, once you're backed up, can you initiate a Windows Refresh? You'd still be able to keep your files, though as I mentioned earlier you'll lose your Grub EFI entries.

Oh, and this may not need to be said, but when you're done and back in windows, go to disk cleanup > Clean up system files> select everything, including delete the previous windows installation. Will probably get you about 8/9 gb back that way.

No on the refresh. It tells me the drive is locked (or something to that effect). Also can't do an upgrade either because that has to be started from withing Windows itself and can't be started directly from the install disc (unless there's a way to do it that I don't know about)

1) Backup all you want to keep to external HDD/USB sticks.
2) Delete all partitions, leaving an apparently 'clean' HDD
3) install Windows (secure boot on/off as you prefer)
4) With secure boot OFF, install Linux after partitioning with GParted.
5) Re-install software/updates as required and restore data from backup(s).

And it should be all good.

Easier than spending time trying to understand why it went belly-up.

Actually, I'd suggest leaving secure boot on during the Linux install. If the installer boots in the first place, it has the proper signatures.

If not, turn it off.

I've always had it off...

EDIT: Arch doesn't officially support Secure Boot so at the moment, I'm probably just going to leave it off for now
