What..actually.. is the point? - Pokémon GO

Running around catching stuff. Cool. I power them up. I've evolved one. But what is the goal or..point?

Has it to do with claiming gyms or whatever and defending them? What do I do with what I've captured?

You build up your Pokedex by catching different Pokemon. Then you can take control of a gym and if you're part of a faction, then you can "team" up to control certain areas.
