What Android phone?

yeah ok dude, your not even understanding this so there is no point in tryin to explain something to a wall.

and i have admitted being wrong plenty of times
tell you what
go to www.google.com
type in samsung holding android updates
and tell me what you find
then
type in the other phone manufacturers, and tell me what you find
k?
thanks

@noobster

Firmware updates are not something you should be concerned with on the Galaxy S, latest firmware available over kies is 2.2.1, same as most other phones released around that period, gingerbread will be re-released soon, for some reason google pulled the gingerbread update.

You said quite clearly they don't provide updates when they clearly do, you are incorrect, simple as that

Whether they hold back updates or not is irrelevant now, I doubt they do, it doesn’t make any sense.

Noobster
these are the best phones going to your location (which i guess is the UK)
Motorola Atrix
Samsung Galaxy S2
LG Optimus 2X
LG Optimus 3d
HTC Sensation

i have heard nothing but good things about the optimus line, the 3d may be more expensive, but supposidly the 3d experience could be amazing.
not much on the sensation
galaxy s2 could be an amazing phone very well worth it IMO as galaxy S line phones are always great
my buddy has the atrix, its a very snappy phone. so its also a consideration. i would find out which of your carriers will offer these phones and go play with them to get a good feel of them.

i personally would wait and go for the optimus 3d because supposidly the released date is right around the corner, (june from what i can tell)
i hope that the optimus line will make it to verizon and offer the optimus 3d cause i would def jump on it.

good luck in your decision bud

Galaxy S phones
Facinate and Captivate

so if you can explain that one, id be glad to know
2 different carriers, almost the same exact phone.
and my buddy has an actual Galaxy S, but he rooted, and romed his so i dont know what version he is on.
My Captivate is on official 2.2 for over a month now. Vibrant and Epic are also on 2.2.

The Fascinates are being updated right now to 2.2.1 I believe.

EU Galaxy S were being updated to 2.3.3 then pulled.

So yes Samsung do upgrade the firmware on their Galaxy S, but SLOWER than other mfg's like HTC and Moto.

For your family's Captivate, use this link:

Captivate official 2.2

Gentlemen, take it easy.
Most of the users don't even care about the updates (hell, some even don't know that the phone software can be updated...). However, for others (like me) having the latest software is important.

Now, looking at manufacturers in the last 2 years, we can say that HTC was the best one in updating their models.
Samsung seems to concentrate their attention only on their flagship Galaxy S, and its carrier clones. They have simply forgotten about updating the other models.
Sony Ericsson thought updating phone software is rubbish. Only later they have realized that it was a mistake and now swear to do that regularly. They even say to update their previous flagship X10 from v2.1 directly to v2.3...

The point is: for those that expect official firmware updates, manufacturer choice is important. It is also equally important to have those updates simply pushed to their phones OTA (like HTC does) and not via some PC sync software (like Samsung does).

There is hope that user community voices will be strong enough to make enough pressure on manufacturers to pay sufficient attention on phone software updates.

This is I think the main reason why Sony changed their tune and Samsung came out and ack'ed the issue and promised faster updates. We'll have to wait and see if Samsung will be good on their promise.

For example, IIRC, HTC Evo and Moto Droid X went Froyo in August and Sept last year. It wasn't until late November that EU Galaxy S went Froyo. US versions had to wait until well into March this year to get 2.2, with the Fascinate being the last, getting Froyo as of now.

Let's see if Samsung gets better with the Gingerbread updates.

This may just be my opinion, but in my years with Android (since the G1 launched) I've noticed that:

Motorola's UI (even stock) usually turns to shit after a while
LG's UI also does the same but maybe even worse
Samsung is always riddled with bugs, and made from cheap plastic, never gets updates

Like I said, this is just what I've personally noticed, but it seems like HTC is the only great all-around smartphone company. Maybe because they're the only major handset maker that ONLY makes smartphones? They know their shit.

You may want to import an HTC phone. Sure it's a hassle, but in 8 months when your Moto/LG/Samsung isn't working right, you'll wish you did.

Just my two pennies.

i tell ya usta i bet if you look on alot of peoples phones that have either samsung or motorola, maybe even htc, you will probably see the android version they shipped with.
but people like you and me, we want the new version asap. im on the leaked gingerbread for the x, just waiting to get home and download fabs apex and apply it, thankfully i leanred titanium backup is a god! i get tired of redoing the moron test, and fruit ninja (thank you amazon app store) and angry birds.

do you think the new sony ericsson phone (which is the psp phone if im not mistaken)
will be updated? or do you think they will stop when they push out a newer version of it...(if they do that is)

i want to move away from moto, i want to go after LG
HTC doesnt have enough battery life history to persuade me to go back
Samsung is good only for the open system unlike motorola, and the newest version of android is only a flash away
i just havent played with an LG before and i really want to :p
if AT&T doesnt acquire T-Mo i will jump to them, cause they get all the nice phones (nexus lineup)

motos launcher is crap, but thankfully ADW EX fixes that ^_^
HTC is a great, and i do mean GREAT phone manufacturer, i just hope their battery issues are solved in the near future.

I played last week with SE Xperia Play, but frankly was not impressed with it. It was lagging sometimes in UI or in certain games (probable these were not well optimized for it). I run System Benchmark app on it (OS v2.3.2) an on my Desire (OS v2.3.3). Xperia is on 2nd generation Snapdragon so it did show a higher GPU score than Desire. However... Deisre showed slightly higher total score (1967) than Xperia Play (1945)!
My second issue with it was the battery life. If a gaming fan spends a few hours playing on it, the phone will not make till the end of the day. That is a shame for a gaming phone.

The good news is that SE said they will update their 2011 phones minimum one software version. So, if Xperia Play or Arc are released with v2.3, they should get v2.4 according to SE. Further than that is a big question.

I'm planning to get my first smartphone and it will be an Android :D

I just can't decide which one to buy, right now i'm leaning towards the Galaxy S a lot.
So what do you guys recommend?
Right now my budget is 500$ and the Galaxy S runs about that or a bit more HERE.
Any other options you guys recommend?
Alright, let me just say that as nice as the Super Amoled might look, what with the bright colors, it is not a very good display. Many discussions can be found here among the forums. Being a bit of a Sprint fanboy, I'd say the EVO 4G is a great device, the EVO 3D is coming out in the coming months, and it will sport a near Retina Display qHD. Stacked up against the SAMOLED, the thing looks beautiful.

If you're not looking for SUPER top of the line, the HTC Shift is decent, with a smaller screen and slide out QWERTY. Pretty decent specs, and it stackes up fairly well against the T-Mobile G2.

If you want more of a pure beginning to Android, the Nexus S by Samsung is a very good phone. 4" SAMOLED screen, 1GHz CPU, etc. Pretty great phone all around, really.

The Thunderbolt is a pretty solid phone as well. Heck, most of the Droid line is pretty good for anyone, but here's a tip: Droid Incredible 2 coming soon, as well as the Bionic.

AT&T has the Aria and the Inspire, the latter of which is more of an EVO on AT&T, but a great phone just the same.

Another thing to consider: if you want to be sure you're going to be getting updates, a higher end phone is the way to go, but if you want them as soon as possible, either the Nexus S or most HTC phone is a great route. HTC tries to get their updates out as quickly as possible while maintaining stability.

I hope that you might find something of use in this mass of information. :D

It is also equally important to have those updates simply pushed to their phones OTA (like HTC does) and not via some PC sync software (like Samsung does).

I agree with that, it's a fair point as OTA updates do make it allot easier, there are users out there who don't have access to a PC and without OTA updates they just can't update.

Samsung added update software to the phone with the 2.2.1 update, so they could use it in the future, I'm not bothered either way, I'd probably never use it.

Almost the same as the Galaxy S, however the Galaxy S has MicroSD slot and HD video recording which for some reason they left off the Nexus S.

I know the Nexus S has some features of it's own but these are actually useful.

Samsung is always riddled with bugs, and made from cheap plastic, never gets updates

Read the thread, you might learn something.

With the Epic and Fascinate, the 2.2 updates were pushed OTA. With the Captivate and Vibrant, it was done via Kies Mini (Windows).

Since Sprint and Verizon pushed their updates OTA, I bet that a significant portion of Epic's and Fascinate's are on 2.2.

Just posted this in another thread but im gonna spread the smileys:

Don't go cheap on your phone selection. You will regret it.

This^ the rest is personal preference. I'll rate the manufacturers by smiley face heh -- these are just my preferences.

:) LG: Sorta new to the scene, specs look awesome on paper, reviews a bit mixed as of now.

:D:):( HTC: great about updates, generally good hardware, recently started locking bootloaders, too much skinning with SenseUI

:D:(:( Motorola: Very good build quality/hardware, good about updates to high-end phones, locked bootloaders, too much skinning with motoblur

:):( Sony: Terrible about updates, decent-ish hardware, skins can be fun but hold back the platform. unlocked bootloaders.

:(:):( Samsung: Not good about updates, annoying iPhone copy UI, decent-ish hardware, bad GPS though. unlocked bootloaders.

Edit: due to new information here's Samsung's new rating:

:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D Samsung is awesome and dont ever tell their fans otherwise. Also, the cake is a lie.

:confused::confused: Asus: don't know enough about them.

:rolleyes::rolleyes: Dell: My god WHY?!?! Don't do it. Life is worth living, just give it a chance.

Come on, please read the thread, they are currently on 2.2 or better and about to roll out gingerbread, I know they have bad rep previously for this but please get your facts straight, updates for the Galaxy S have been pretty good, US users did have to wait a little longer though.

Decentish hardware? is that a joke? the Galaxy S is almost a year old and still competes with all the latest phones, the gaming performance is a simalar level is tegra 2 and this is only decentish? Take another phone released around the same period, the Desire, that is now stuggling in the latest games, many of which just don't support it anymore because it can't cope.

GPS issue was addressed, design issue with the antena, shouldn't have that issue with the new phones.

The interface to down to personnal perference, I prefer it to sense.

You need to relax. It was a half hearted joke post, not meant to insult your choice in hardware.

prettu much got it all right
however
htc locked the thunderbolt, but
its not encrypted like motorola
BIGGGG difference

lol not trying to cause any hurt feelings I just had fun with the absurdity of using smileys as ratings. So but yeah I didnt wanted to get into the particulars of locked/signed or bootloaders delivered from Satan himself. Just a nod to it as a possible :) or :(

then you can sue me for doing this :)

Wow, awesome when i get lots of responses :D
And no i'm not in the UK, i'm in latin america.

And if i'm not mistaken i won't see any dual core Android here unless i pay like 800$ for one which i won't xD
The best phone that i can get right now are a Galaxy S or a Motorola (Not sure which models they sell here, but there are some Droids).
Even a Galaxy S is already running me around 500$ or a tid bit more without taxes x_x
With taxes throw in like 40-50$ more and it's hella expensive. Of course i'll get one unlocked and without contract (I hate contracts)

I might just get the Galaxy S (It's the most common one so it's cheaper) and later like in a year when prices on dual core comes down here i'll upgrade.

Still, i'm open to opinions :DD
I might look for other options such as HTC and Motorola but i don't have high hopes i will find them cheap x_X

BTW, i freaking hate blackberries such a scam and people still buy it. (All down to personal opinion)
