My Captivate is on official 2.2 for over a month now. Vibrant and Epic are also on 2.2.Galaxy S phones
Facinate and Captivate
so if you can explain that one, id be glad to know
2 different carriers, almost the same exact phone.
and my buddy has an actual Galaxy S, but he rooted, and romed his so i dont know what version he is on.
This is I think the main reason why Sony changed their tune and Samsung came out and ack'ed the issue and promised faster updates. We'll have to wait and see if Samsung will be good on their promise. There is hope that user community voices will be strong enough to make enough pressure on manufacturers to pay sufficient attention on phone software updates.

This may just be my opinion, but in my years with Android (since the G1 launched) I've noticed that:
Motorola's UI (even stock) usually turns to shit after a while
LG's UI also does the same but maybe even worse
Samsung is always riddled with bugs, and made from cheap plastic, never gets updates
Like I said, this is just what I've personally noticed, but it seems like HTC is the only great all-around smartphone company. Maybe because they're the only major handset maker that ONLY makes smartphones? They know their shit.
You may want to import an HTC phone. Sure it's a hassle, but in 8 months when your Moto/LG/Samsung isn't working right, you'll wish you did.
Just my two pennies.
I played last week with SE Xperia Play, but frankly was not impressed with it. It was lagging sometimes in UI or in certain games (probable these were not well optimized for it). I run System Benchmark app on it (OS v2.3.2) an on my Desire (OS v2.3.3). Xperia is on 2nd generation Snapdragon so it did show a higher GPU score than Desire. However... Deisre showed slightly higher total score (1967) than Xperia Play (1945)!do you think the new sony ericsson phone (which is the psp phone if im not mistaken)
will be updated? or do you think they will stop when they push out a newer version of it...(if they do that is)
Alright, let me just say that as nice as the Super Amoled might look, what with the bright colors, it is not a very good display. Many discussions can be found here among the forums. Being a bit of a Sprint fanboy, I'd say the EVO 4G is a great device, the EVO 3D is coming out in the coming months, and it will sport a near Retina Display qHD. Stacked up against the SAMOLED, the thing looks beautiful.I'm planning to get my first smartphone and it will be an Android
I just can't decide which one to buy, right now i'm leaning towards the Galaxy S a lot.
So what do you guys recommend?
Right now my budget is 500$ and the Galaxy S runs about that or a bit more HERE.
Any other options you guys recommend?

It is also equally important to have those updates simply pushed to their phones OTA (like HTC does) and not via some PC sync software (like Samsung does).
If you want more of a pure beginning to Android, the Nexus S by Samsung is a very good phone. 4" SAMOLED screen, 1GHz CPU, etc. Pretty great phone all around, really.

Don't go cheap on your phone selection. You will regret it.

LG: Sorta new to the scene, specs look awesome on paper, reviews a bit mixed as of now.

HTC: great about updates, generally good hardware, recently started locking bootloaders, too much skinning with SenseUI

Motorola: Very good build quality/hardware, good about updates to high-end phones, locked bootloaders, too much skinning with motoblur

Sony: Terrible about updates, decent-ish hardware, skins can be fun but hold back the platform. unlocked bootloaders.

Samsung: Not good about updates, annoying iPhone copy UI, decent-ish hardware, bad GPS though. unlocked bootloaders.

Samsung is awesome and dont ever tell their fans otherwise. Also, the cake is a lie.

Asus: don't know enough about them.

Dell: My god WHY?!?! Don't do it. Life is worth living, just give it a chance.Samsung: Not good about updates, annoying iPhone copy UI, decent-ish hardware, bad GPS though. unlocked bootloaders.
Come on, please read the thread, they are currently on 2.2 or better and about to roll out gingerbread, I know they have bad rep previously for this but please get your facts straight, updates for the Galaxy S have been pretty good, US users did have to wait a little littler longer though.
Decentish hardware? is that a joke? the Galaxy S is almost a year old and still competes with all the latest phones, the gaming performance is a simalar level is tegra 2 and this is only decentish? Take another phone released around the same period, the Desire, that is now stuggling in the latest games, many of which just don't support it anymore because it can't cope.
GPS issue was addressed, design issue with the antena, shouldn't have that issue with the new phones.
The interface to down to personnal perference, I prefer it to sense.
You need to relax. It was a half hearted joke post, not meant to insult your choice in hardware.

Just posted this in another thread but im gonna spread the smileys:
This^ the rest is personal preference. I'll rate the manufacturers by smiley face heh -- these are just my preferences.
