Couldn't find a dedicated subforum, so I hope this is ok.

I'm in Canada for the summer without a laptop.
I was initially planning on buying a Kindle Fire & rooting it eventually - both for the eReader & internet capabilities.

$200 seems like a manageable price point right now - cheaper would be good, I could spend a bit more if I was getting a noticeably better tablet.
I'm looking for it mostly to (and in this order):

  • Read
  • Surf internet/email
  • Music/movies (HD not a big issue)

With the Kindle, is the screen/app better suited for reading?
What else is in this price bracket that is comparable or better?
I'm from (and returning to) Ireland, so I need to be able to use everything back home too. I believe if I root the Fire that's not a problem?

Looking to buy (online) in the next week or so.

i would personally go with the kindle fire, any other tablet will cost more, and there are some no name tablets you can get for next to nothing, but you will buy what you pay for with those

My advise: check Craigslist and ebay for a good deal on the Fire. I've seen them for less than $150 in amazing condition and with goodies (case, charges, screen protectors, etc). I have a Nook Color and a Fire. The truth is, I use my Razr Maxx for virtually everything and barely use the two tablets. The Fire is better than the Nook in my opinion. I have the Nook with MIUI and the Fire with ICS; both are very easy to root and customize.

For what you want the tablet for, the Fire is more than OK. However, check this out.
