What AntiVirus do you use?

Mehta23

Android Expert
Before the last install of Windows I was using a 1 year free Avast, but now my 30 days of Avast Internet Security has ran out, and I'm deliberating whether or not to buy it, go back and install the anitvirus 1 year (not internet security) or go for something else like NOD or MSE.

Thoughts? What do you use?

(Apologies in advance, Mehta. It's just that if I DON'T say this, everyone will wonder if I've dropped dead.)

"What AntiVirus do you use?"

Linux. :D

I've never had a virus on my PC, but I don't know if that's because I don't do anything "dodgy" or if it's due to my firewall/antivirus.

(still thinking about that move to Linux, gonna need to use an ubuntu dvd to root my phone, so it'll be a good taster)

edit: I couldn't wait so I'm trying it out now [Hello from Linux!]. Probably doesn't belong here, but it's quite like OSX and I actually quite like it.

Use linux, its way more secure and there's a way smaller amount of people trying to attack it. Don't be fooled though, if your connected you're vulnerable. On that note, I generallly feel like antivirus is just an exploit. Ever notice how the second your prescription is up you suddenly have a ton of security threats? Just don't be stupid, don't download anything unless its from someplace you know about. Never(in general) go for any of that java popup crap like 'you need to update this or that driver' yada yada. With that all said, I usually run AVG Free on my Windows machines.

AVG or Avast.

I wouldn't use Norton or McAfee if you paid me. We had problems with both when I worked in IT >10 yrs ago and that did it for me. No more with either. Ever.

Just remember the name ComboFix if you get anything that the other AV programs can't remove. Just make sure to take your time when using it. You can seriously screw up your installation if you rush through using it.

I've used Norton on and off for 10 years, I've actually never had any problems out of it aside from the extremely slow scanning on my end.

Norton and MacAffe stopped getting my support when they force you to pay a ton for updates. i mean why pay that much for the software if i have to keep paying a similar price for updates? no thanks. ChromeOS, Android, Kubuntu and, to a minimum extent, (games exclusively) Windows 8.

I have windows 8, and I believe this comes with something called something, I don't know. I rarely ever download anything to my computer, unless its from a trusted company, like Steam. I like Windows 8 in desktop mode, but dont use the modern UI that much, as I do not have a touch screen.

On my other computers, I have another windows 8 machine, a Windows 7 with MSE (Microsoft security essentials), a Linux computer, and 3 android devices.

I use a 3 Anti virus Hitsquad combo :P

Spybot- search and destroy (free)

MalwareBytes (licensed)

Advanced System Care (Licensed)

Nothing ever infects my Win7 laptop anymore.

Also, in my opinion, Anti virus like Avast, AVG, or Norton (or any others that are similar) use up way to many resources. MalwareBytes and Spybot - search and destroy are rather low in resources.

If you get Advanced System Care you'll see why it's a little higher than the other 2, but it has so many features it couldn't be helped lol.

Oh and there is no compatibility issues with them either!:)

I am another Malwarebytes pro user. Low resource real time scanning, very good overall as well. Granted, I do a lot of my work in a Linux VM.

Best antivirus you need to use is "Your Head" I have not used any firewalls or anti virues for the past 6-7 years. Truth is, in most cases people get viruses, malware, spyware, etc. by installing them themselves. I had a DNS switcher once, it's really nasty thing to get, but got rid of it really quickly. If you have issue you can't fix try ComboFix by BeepingPC. It's always handy to have Malwarebytes as well.
