What are "push messages"?

I keep getting push messages for some really dodgy looking things, and I'm worried that I might accidentally buy some or other kind of premium service.

What are push messages, and how can I stop them. I'm getting at least one a day. Of this caused by an app, and if so how can I tell which one? I've tried to reply to the messages (the whole reply STOP to opt out thing), but my message always fails.

Moolah Media

Urban Airship
Xtify

Run 'Addons Detector' and 'AirPush Detector' to find out when one of these AirPush addons is in one of your free apps.
With 'Addons Detector' use the filter 'Push Notifications'.
