Xdreamer brings up a good point. In terms of cash value, the iPhone seems to be a good investment, which makes the idea of selling an old iPhone to defray the cost of a new version quite palatable.

First off, I have a Nexus One and love the phone. But on occasion, I get into discussions with the iphone fans in my office. I ask them, "Name something the iphone can do out of the box, that an Android phone can't do?" They have yet to tell me anything.

I then tell them some of the thing Android does that the iphone can't (voice to text, widgets, google integration, etc)

So, is there anything the iphone can do out of the box, that Android can't? I personally can't think of anything

If this is serious, I'll answer, forgive me if it's just being humorous. I'm relatively new to having my Android phone, so if I'm wrong on these, please point it out to me :) .

1) click on phone numbers anywhere to call someone. Pet peeve of mine so far on android unless someone can show me how to do it.

2)click on a tracking number in emails to automatically pull up the UPS/Fedex/USPS site and tracking service

3)Lots of things related to apps that haven't been ported to Android. Some of this is not that Android can't do them, it's just that the apps that do them are not as refined...aka don't work as well. Air Video, Golfshot, TomTom/Navigon(I know Navigon is coming, but it's not here yet in the US). I love these apps so much and it makes me sad that I can't use them now.

4)Bluetooth full functionality. Supposedly this is coming in Froyo, but I'm not sure how it will be. Can my play/pause button control pandora, slacker radio, etc? Can I press the call button down to pull up the voice controls like iPhone? There are more, but you get the point on this one.

Now, don't get me wrong, for every one thing iPhone does, there are ten things, at least, that Android can do that iPhone doesn't. But these have been the ones that really bother me so far.

1) click on phone numbers anywhere to call someone. Pet peeve of mine so far on android unless someone can show me how to do it.

As long as the number follows the URI scheme, it does. A click or perhaps a long-press on the number should put it in the dialer.

2)click on a tracking number in emails to automatically pull up the UPS/Fedex/USPS site and tracking service

It should, however all of the tracking numbers i've had emailed are usually a link and not simply text so i can't test it for you right now.

4)Bluetooth full functionality. Supposedly this is coming in Froyo, but I'm not sure how it will be. Can my play/pause button control pandora, slacker radio, etc? Can I press the call button down to pull up the voice controls like iPhone?

It could be dependent on the device, but yes, FroYo does allow the call button on the Bluetooth device to bring up voice commands.

Yep, used a iPhone 3g for 1.5 years..bought for $99, sold for $200 in one day; bought 3gs for $250...nice upgrade.

iPhone do and will hold their value for a year or two, not just for six months. Probably only because Android is moving so fast. The Nexus One, and a few other phones also seem to be hold value nicely.

well for me out of the box my android devices out class iphone completly. i bought my nexus one when the 3gs was still "king" and the i4 only has a few features over it, the thing is the i4 has had alot more time in deveolment then the phones around for as logn as they are and still only on par. and thats a huge turn off for me, apple just released the i4 and its only on par with other devices that have been out for some time. and while i understand android is doing the same, in a few months i will have the oppertunity to upgrade to a much better phone then that is out there, apple users have to wait a long time for the next iphone.

appl ehad it right with the ipod then the iphone, releasing hardware and sofware that was miles ahead of everyone else. but that game has ended, and their latest work isnt miles ahead of the game anymore, they had a huge head start on the world, jsut like with their pc's. at one point everyone, every school everywhere had a Mac, now they dont, they stopped being revolutinary and became a nich, i imagine iphone will do the same, there will always be fans of both sides. im not really a fan of sides i like functinality, for me its coast effective to stay with a system that upgrades faster.

A lot of the differences between iphone and Android seem to come down to the word "can". The iphone has a series of defined 'cans' and there is little to no wiggle room beyond them. On android (provided you have a phone with an unlocked boot loader), Google is very permissive about its 'cans'. Android has a sense of freedom that is very appealing to those of us willing to look beneath the surface. All the functionality of an iphone or itouch is very easy and quick to find and once you find it, you're done. Android has that layer that is similar to the iphones and then there is deeper stuff. Ive had a droid for 4 months now and almost everyday I find some new thing it can do, some new facet in its operation that makes it a new toy all over again. Out of the box it did everything that the iphone did, just as easily but on the iphone there was no deeper layer of stuff to tinker with. To me, Android on the Droid 1 makes the Iphone seem.... remedial.

In iOS
-you click "Settings"
-click Wallpaper
-You pick an image from a gallery
-crop/zoom in/zoom out if you want
-Click set
-Click "Use as Wallpaper"

Android
- you long-press your homescreen
- pick Wallpapers
-pick gallery
- pick a picture
- crop/zoom
-tap "Save."

Why is android easier its pretty much the same except you need to know to use a hidden gesture vs knowing you need to go to a settings app to change all you device settings.

Hows updating apps on android pre 2.2 vs iphone. One button to update all vs having to update each individually.

How taking screen shots on an android device?
On iphone its : press home and power button, done.

When does the search button bring up universal search, when does the back button take you out of an app, when does menu button do something. All app functions are displayed on the screen for an iphone but android phones you need to test the effect of each button in each app.

hmm. your post seems rather contradictory. first you say in order to change wallpapers in android you need to know a gesture/shortcut, so the point is moot. yet you refer to a screenshot taking shortcut on the iphone and use it to claim ease of use on the iphone.

and by the way to change wallpaper on android (with sense anyway) you just hit menu, wallpapers, select LIVE (which iphone doesnt have), HTC wallpapers, or photos, and simply "set wallpaper" under the image. Done. no shortcuts.

and as far as updating my apps, i don't update all of them. a lot of times an app update can take away a feature i don't want to lose (ex: youtube and dolphin browser scenario) or just changes advertisements in the app

I'd say Apple's at a cusp. They are still capable of coming out with a few tricks up their sleeve like the retinal display but they won't be able to keep up with the hardware race for long. The retinal display actually confirmed what I suspected: that they are incapable of coming out with anything larger than 3.5". Other oem's will surely beat that resolution but with larger screens.
And I didn't count on Apple's antenna problems or them basically giving android a killer exclusive app with Flash. I mean...when I think of a Mac, I think a computer that someone buys to use Photoshop. They made it even worse because now they won't allow compiled flash apps that they previously accepted.

And your reply means what??
You need a data plan with any new Android phone regardless.

As for ATT, carrier performance is all anecdotal. Ever hear the phrase YMMV? I happen to be in a very good ATT area so your reply means what??? Some people actually choose ATT and it has nothing to do with the iPhone.

Again, what does ATT have to do with this?

not sure how you DON'T understand what he meant by that. He means your car REQUIRES you to have AT&T (Iphone) to use the feature. I happen to be in an area where AT&T coverage is garbage. I'm not sure if you realize this or not but not everyone who has at&t lives in your area haha. And as for the comment on wires looking "ghetto" in a new car, wouldn't playing music through bluetooth be the way to go? i mean even with the iphone solution mrspeedmaster is in love with, there is still a wire. I'm sure any new car you buy will have bluetooth playback. dead subject IMO

As for bluetooth, you still need to control the interface and skip tracks using the device. Hence you'll need to cradle it up and make it accessible to the driver.

With the iOS solution, with wires, the phone is hidden from view. It is in the glovebox or in the center console; hidden from view and everything is controlled through the car's interface (touchscreen and steering wheel). This is the anti-thesis of ghetto.

I understand the ATT comment, he was making it sound like ATT is simply bad. I agree it depends on your location.

Well the camera definitely crushes most android phones ive seen... and I have an evo. But the pics/video isnt even a contest.

be shinny and have a front facing camera...and I have yet to see anyone use the front facing camera.
I agree! People brag that up, bit it's useless IMO unless you're a 13 year old girl who is always taking photos with her BFF!

iPhone has some cool apps that we don't, but other than that I'm not envious at all! I have to admit the iPhone 4 looks BA even if it doesn't work well.

Oh no not a wire or two! *gasp* sounds like someone has OCD and once again, the average person really doesn't care, and a standard aux jack will do just fine. You know whaats even better? When apple falls on its face, again, all these docks in the cars will be utterly useless. And the mere fact is, standard options like bluetooth and aux out cables will always beat proprietary solutions in the long run.

I agree with this. There is an inherent risk to attaching your fortunes to non-standard formats. The good thing is that car manufacturers can fix shortsightedness in a new model the next year.

But, the argument is reversed now. I don't think the average consumer will base a car purchase on the type of phone they have, or vice versa. An auxiliary jack is a simple, standard solution.

No andriod has up to five multi touches on the screen maybe 3 and the graphics r way better than any evo and has a gyro system which andriod is just adding support for but I do wish u could turn wifi on and off with a widget on the iPhone instead of having to go into settings and who can forget the amazing retina display which is weirdly better than the iPod touches retina display

there are somethings that iphone has that android dont.

but.......

there are more things that android can and iphone cant! I would go so far as to say... more significant things.

Neither of which can compare to an iPod dock in terms of sound quality. Bluetooth output is horrible. 3.5 mm audio jack is slightly better, but not ideal if you have want quality music playing from your phone. If you can afford an expensive car stereo system, you want to play music that can utilise its full potential. So until someone come up with an android that can output music with a digital connection, iPhone is still ahead of the game. (Mass storage mode doesn't work for most android phone.)

Secondly, most android phone only supports one loseless codec - wav, which has massive file size. Galaxy S supports FLAC, but there are plenty of problems. iPhone supports apple's own loseless codec.

Super Amoled > retina

I disagree. My friend has an iPhone 4, and I have a Galaxy S. We have placed our phones side by side, and the iPhone 4 does look sharper.

Also, with Android, you have a bunch of wires hanging out for charging/audio and you need to use a cradle whereas the iPhone can be docked into a car (that has the dock) and in hidden view. In luxury car and an Android phone (take your pick), you have a rats net with a bunch of hanging wires and junk that may not even work properly. Can you image a suction cup mount, and Android phone with 2 wires dangling from a Maserati or a Jaguar? You need to mount the phone because you have no steering wheel controls to control your music.
I think this is a bit of a stretch.

My current vehicle (IS F) connects to my Droid via bluetooth, allowing me to control commands through the steering wheel, or the NAV display. It also transfers your address book to the cars HDD, using the same method. Not to go tit for tat, but those are the main features most are concerned with.

Charging the phone is done with a right-angle charger, which sits neatly in my arm rest, connected by one non-visible wire (assuming it needs to be charged.). Most days, my phone doesn't leave my pocket, as it automatically links and handles phone/music duties, just fine, while also being able to give nav directions through the car speakers (for those who don't have a nav option). If it does need to be charged, it sits in the arm rest, out of sight.

This isn't to say the option to have an in-car dock for an iPhone isn't nice, but there are universal alternatives which work just fine, without strawman arguments.

The iPhone has a much better selection of games and integrates with iTunes for music. That's about it in my opinion. It's nothing you can't get with an iPod Touch.

I also have a Nexus One and once in a while I'll tether the Touch to it, but mostly they have different use cases for me, so having those functions in two separate devices really isn't an issue... and saves my phone battery for communications type stuff.

My Droid Incredible integrates with iTunes if I want it to. And it'll sync wirelessly. You can't do this with iOS because Apple has decreed that you can't.
