The Orange App Shop and its on device client (one click access to the shop on every new Orange devices) allows different things:
1. It is multi-devices (SE / Samsung / BB / HTC / Nokia / Motorola)
2. It is multi-platform (Java / Symbian / WM / Rim / Android)
3. It is an opportunity to reach a arge amount of consumers.

Personnaly I think that this kind of initiative might be more successful coming from a carrier rather than a device manufacturer (Nokia Ovi Store for instance).

But again, I'm not objective since I'm managing the developer community platform for Orange as a consultant. I realize that there is still a lot of thins to do in order to recruit grat developers and great apps to the shop, but at least it seems to me it is a good start.

That's also the reason why I wanted to have your point of view.

Well Orange has always sold apps via OrangeWorld in the UK at least. So I wonder if this is just a fleshed out version, making it more accessible, the old one was pretty terrible.

mobile apps - what's it all about?

It seems to be available on orange world right now, although I cant see it myself.

I'm not sure how popular its going to be to be honest, at least not with Android/iPhone users, as their own markets are much better/convenient. Maybe will be good for non-smarthphones though.

Hi X-Ter
For the moment only a few devices are concerned : Sony Ericsson W995, Yari, C905, C510, W595, W910i and Nokia 6303 and 6700. It represents about 1 million french and English users.
More to come in early january.

Lekky,

it is not onlythe launch of an on-device client, meaning that the App Shop will be accessible on every Orange handsets in one click (icon on the Homescreen). It is also a large improvement of the App Shop itself, in terms of navigation and content (apps).

Ah, I'll check my gf's phone when she gets home, she has some type of SE. I just cant imagine iPhone or Android users going to that over their own markets. But may be used by other smart phone users, im not totally sure what else, if anything they have in terms of an app store.
