What does a good in-game tutorial look like?

Hey all, I'm just wondering what you guys like to see in a good in-game tutorial in a android game. I just released my first Android Game, and it seems like everyone is getting the wrong idea on how to play.

In the game, you jump onto falling debris so you can jump off of it to the next falling object and just get perpetually higher. When a lot of people play the game, they think they're are supposed to dodge the objects and just jump wall to wall, and they get very low scores and I imagine the game isn't very fun (although I haven't gotten negative feedback yet).

I put in a HowTo screen and an extremely simple in-game tutorial on what to do (all it is is messages on the screen that tell you what to do).

So, my real question is, in general, what do you guys like to see in a good in-game tutorial?

If you want to check out the app to see what I mean, it's called Ninja's Ascent on Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.drsupersocks.ninja
