Help What does encryption do on S3?

Well in that case, just put secret photos in a folder called ".nomedia"
I have just bought a S3 yesterday. I have been trying to get more info on encrypting a S3, but so far the internet has as usual only offered conflicting info. The main reason I am considering this is I will most likely be downloading a paypal app for my phone. I don't know enough about security for online transactions via a cell phone. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
