What does Exchange Services do? Any problems disabling it?

Does the Exchange Services app that comes preinstalled on many Android devices simply support interacting with Microsoft Exchange servers?

Does it perform any other functions?

Besides not being able to interact with corporate Exchange servers (to sync email/calendars), are there any downsides to disabling it?

You have identified its functionality perfectly. If you don't have need for a connection to MS Exchange, disable it (I did).
