Hi
See this

Its written for a specific phone (HTC Desire) but much of it is common to many. You must however check the precise details for your own make and exact model of phone before trying to root it.
The "root" of an android phone is the base level folder of the file system and is normally restricted from view/access by users unless you have gained "root" access. If you have "root" access you can modify, delete, add to and mess up any and all parts of your phone. (Sometimes with no way back).
Hope this helps
Roger
