What does the proxcimity sensor actualy do?

right i know what one is i just mean what use does it have because i dont think mine does much at all. would be handy if it beeps before you walk into a lampost whilst sending an sms though
 
It auto-turns off the screen when you hold it up to your ear during a call, so you don't press buttons. Probably has other uses too.
