Help What does the 'Software Update' option actually do?

Settings - about phone - software update

Does this alert me when new firmware is available on Kies?
 
It would do if Samsung actually turned the thing on. As far as I know the servers that this feature connects to are not active for FOTA updates.

We'll just have to wait for Samsung to turn the feature on. They've had enough time to do it so maybe it's imminent.
