Hey, I just bought a Samsung Galaxy 551 and was just playing around with it. I realized Task Manager, I understand what ending your active applications does but what does clearing your RAM do?
Ram is the temporary memory the operations/programs use . Clearing Ram can make operations faster and more smooth. This is especially important with phones that have a limited amount of Ram to begin with. An example would be the horrible Samsung Galaxy Smart I am using now.

Android uses RAM differently than other devices. By clearing your RAM, you're only forcing your phone work harder and thus precious battery life because your CPU is going to reload that RAM by caching something else that it determines you will need.
Your best best is to sit back and relax and let Android do it's job, and don't worry about the RAM.
