Help What happens when you clear data on "Google app"

Lurker
Hi there,
I am using Samsung Galaxy Grand Neo- GT-19060
1.) I was facing internal memory issues and hence under frustration i hit "clear data" on the Google App (Settings>More>Application Manager>Google App> Clear Data).
I would like to know since I cleared data will this just reset the Google App on phone or does it delete my google docs and gmail accounts permanently from Server. I am really worried since I have so many important emails on Gmail and so many important documents on Docs.
Also, I would like to mention I did this about a month ago and havent faced a problem yet. However, I read somewhere that the account takes about 90-180 days to be deleted permanently. So is my gmail and docs save or am I in a stage where a couple of days more and my accounts (i have 2 gmail accounts on phone) will be deleted.

2.) Incase I "Clear data" for google docs and gmail on phone. How does it affect my accounts. Does it just reset them on my phone or delete them permanently from Server. In Simple terms, does Clear Data affect just the phone or the accounts on server.
Thank you.

Don't worry, clearing the data from the app just means it resets the apps to factory conditions. Nothing from your Google account has been deleted. :)

Thank you.
So, my contacts, emails and docs will all remain intact.?
Also, what are the signs that the account has been deleted and just a couple of days are left for the account to be removed permanently from server?
and also, do we receive a message from Google informing about the deletion of account or the days left?

Thank you.

All your stuff will remain intact. And your account cannot be deleted unless you go to a specific Google setting. It's very well hidden, so no need to worry. Everything will remain intact.

I have the same problem and marking emails "as read" on my PC didn't solve it. I opened App Manager on my Samsung Galaxy Core Prime and have cleared the gmail cache but when I go to "clear data" it does say that my account will be deleted so I am rather nervous of going down this route.

The warning when trying to clear data in the Gmail app is indeed scary, but it doesn't exactly mean what it says. Clearing data of the Gmail app will delete all emails from your phone. But being that all those emails are not just in the app but also backed up to Gmail's servers, nothing will happen to them. The only thing that will happen after clearing the Gmail app, is that when you'll open Gmail again, it's as if you never used it in your phone, so it will ask you what email address you want to use (if you have a few on your phone) and then it will sync all the emails you had till now.

Not sure what you meant by marking as read issue

So all my emails will disappear from my phone temporarily until they re-appear after a new sync?

The "Mark as read" reference was a fix I tried after reading another post. Many people said that doing this via a browser on a PC worked for them but it didn't for me.

Correct

Mark as read is supposed to do exactly that, take your unread emails and Mark them as if you opened them. What was this supposed to be a fix for?

For finding any unread ones I suppose.

I've done Clear Data twice now but nothing happened and the counter still shows 40 unread emails. Any other solutions??

Did you make sure that you don't actually have 40 unread emails? To check that, open Gmail in desktop and see if there's a number next to your inbox (see screenshot) if there is a number, then select all emails, press Mark as read, then go to next page and do the same screenshot 2 (basically not all emails show up on one page so you have to go to all pages to mark them as read.)

If you did all of the above and there is still a number on the Gmail app, see if clearing the cache of your launcher helps.

Definitely don't have 40 (or any) unread emails. When I open app manager there is no app called Launcher amongst the apps in the list.

The launcher is the home screen of your phone. On Samsung devices it's called 'touch wiz' you can find it by going to settings/apps, in the menu select 'show system apps' then scroll down to touch wiz and clear cache, or you can even clear data, but that would mean that you'll have to add all your app shortcuts back to the home screen.
Btw what email app are you using? Cuz Gmail on my phone doesn't ever have a number of how many under emails are unread.

Finally did find All and then found TouchWiz and cleared the cache. Still no good so I removed the Gmail icon from my home screen and then put it back but it's a different icon now (the capital M one) so maybe it won't now give a number count for unread emails. I have the same problem with YouTube, which also shows 41. Tried all the same things but nothing has worked. I'll carry on trying. Thanks for all your help!
