what if Android gets stolen?

since i have a lot of personal information on my phone, texts, pictures, contacts, emails and auto-login to social media accounts, i was wondering how to be safe if in case the android device gets stolen?

i have heard that some apps can remote wipe all data, via sending an sms or so, but i cant find them around here.

most of the people would talk about tracking it, but it wont work where i live, i'd rather remove all the data to feel safe. inputs please?

suggestion on apps please?

Thanks

I have an app called Android Lost on my phone. It allows gps tracking and remote wipe, taking pictures with the camera, etc.. There is also where's my droid, lookout, and a bunch more in the play store.

Not even the FBI can open a pattern lock as far as I last read, so I'd guess you're safe. And the remote data wipe apps an additional security.

There are several apps that do this. Cerberus, Seekdroid, Lookout and Autowipe all jump immediately to mind. VZW has an app that does this as well. I don't know who your carrier is, but they may have their own.

I use Avast! mobile which inludes security for free. I haven't rooted my Galaxy yet which is required for the firewall feature. here is a quote;

"
A standalone yet tightly integrated component of the avast! Mobile Security environment, avast! Anti-Theft is the slyest component on the market – because your security app should not alert potential thieves about its presence. You'll be able to remotely control your 'lost' phone by SMS at any time, with no signals indicated on the phone itself. Formerly known as Theft Aware, the Anti-Theft portion of avast! Free Mobile Security has been recommended by leading industry experts that include T-Mobile, N-TV, AndroidPIT, and Android Police."

i found on their website that LookOut comes with Wipe in the Pro (purchased) version, and without the Wipe, its of no use to me, and im not willing to pay if another app does that for free.

if you use the built in security.. your info should be safe.

the only big issue.. is the SDcard.. it has photos and info there too...
they can just take out the SDcard and put it into any PC and ................

Why won't it work where you live? I recently had my HTC desire stolen, and found Lookout Plan B to be fantastic after that, would definitely recommend it. It can be installed remotely, and tracks the location of the phone after that to within metres (Unfortunately the police refused to go to the address to get my phone after that happened, but meh..).
Not sure about the data thing though, I would also be interested in getting something that can wipe data if that happens..

I want to switch to this from where's my Droid. But the way this one works (and I think WMD, too) is you use your Google account credentials to sign in. Is that safe? Couldn't the developer then get it? I like all the features listed for Android Lost, like remote listen and making the speaker say something.

Edit: nevermind, they both use Google's service that logs in through Google itself. I was thinking about Splashtop, which you put your login directly in for. Which makes me a little uneasy, but I love the app, so I ignore it.

And Android Lost is pretty awesome.

so this Android Lost is able to wipe the data. but it needs the phone to be connected to either wifi or data connection, right?

Yeah, I think so. The only other option would be through SMS, and I don't think it will do it that way, but check for yourself. I'm not even sure if WMD will do that through SMS, but it does have more SMS features, so if that's something you want, you might check.

But the way I figure it, if they have it set where an SMS will go through, they've still got mobile data on. If they turn that off because they don't want to get caught, hopefully they get on wifi, and that'll be your last chance.
