What is a kernel?

a kernel is a a core that all software runs off of to put it bluntly. You now have two basic kernels, win and unix with multiple subs on the unix side. anyways think of it as a car that takes diesel or gas with cars that would prefer different grades of gas on the gas side but diesels and gas dont get along in an engine without special equipment to convert the fuel over
 
it helps the OS talk to the Hardware... better efficient kernel.. helps the hardware work more efficiently with the OS.

ex:
better kernels help overclock the CPU to perform faster.. when the OS needs the power.
