I am new to android wear, I want a smart watch to run a navigation app called back country navigator, i have spoke to the app people and only android wear watch will work, I thought all android watches were the same?
cheers
Android Wear is the OS Google developed for watches and wearables. Samsung developed their own OS called Tizen. So even though the Samsung watches work with Samsung Android phones they do not necessarily work with all Android OS phones. Things are changing now though. Samsung has allowed some other phones to work with their watches but it's a work in progress. It would appear that the folks at Back Country have sided with Google.
Here's an opinion piece from Android Authority that compares the 2.
As previously pointed out, the "Modular Smart Watch" is (a) still vapourware and (b) will most likely not use Android Wear, so its inclusion is spurious at best.
@blackfive afaik the only Android Wear smartwatch with integrated (as opposed to relying on the paired smartphone's) GPS is the Sony Smartwatch 3. I can't comment on how it works with Backcountry Navigator but as an avid outdoors enthusiast here in the UK I'll give the free version a try-out. I do know that it works well with Google My Tracks.
